"I thought the things we kind of challenged them on last week, managing ourselves and focusing on getting better; we did a pretty good job of," Director of Track & Field Walt Drenth said. "It had been awhile since we competed, and going forward into the season we're going to be looking for the ability to make adjustments and be prepared."
MSU took home two titles in the jumps, with senior Ellen DiPietro winning the high jump (1.78m) and senior Asya Reynolds getting the victory in the long jump (5.75m). Â Sophomore Sophia Franklin won the pole vault (4.00m) for the Spartans.
Freshman Rebecca Mammel won her second weight throw competition in as many tries this season, throwing the weight 20.48 meters. She was the only competitor to toss the weight more than 20 meters, doing it three different times.
On the track, sophomore Morgan Beadlescomb ran 8:12.17 to win the men's 3,000-meters, while redshirt-junior Jonathan Fife set a meet record of 6.78 seconds in the men's 60-meter dash to win the title for MSU.
Still early on in the indoor season, the goal for the Spartans is continuing to improve, build consistency and being ready to compete. Â
"In track & field, what we need to do with each athlete is have them ready at the championship period," Drenth said. "That doesn't mean that conventionally we're going to go to every meet and compete them in their best event. We're going to keep moving people around, and everything is kind of based on what happened last week, along with what we feel like we need to do to move forward."
MSU faces Michigan, No. 25m/19w Ohio State, No. 14m/23w Penn State, Maryland and Nebraska on Saturday, in what will serve as a preview for the Big Ten Indoor Championships on Feb. 22-23, also at the U-M Indoor Track Building. Â
"I think this will give us a good point of reference five, six weeks out from the conference championship," Drenth said. "Some of the better teams in the conference are going to be there, so in every event you'll be able to look around and see kind of where we are now. We'll be able to see the progressions needed and adjustments we need to make in order to score points down the road."
Saturday's meet begins at 11 a.m. and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network from Noon-3:30 p.m. ET. Live results are available on msuspartans.com, and complete results will be posted after the conclusion of the meet.
