EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State track & field indoor season resumes this weekend with the team splitting between the Power Five Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Indiana, February 1-2.
Spartan sprinters, jumpers, throwers and a few distance runners are headed for Ann Arbor, while the remainder of the distance runners will be competing in South Bend at the 32nd annual Meyo Invitational.

Both meets get underway with field events Friday afternoon, and both will resume Saturday morning with event finals.
The Spartans are coming off a strong performance last time out at the Simmons-Harvey Big Ten Invitational in Ann Arbor, featuring victories from sophomore Sophia Franklin (women's pole vault), redshirt-sophomore Morgan Beadlescomb (men's 3,000-meters) and senior Justine Kiprotich (men's mile). After a week off, the stretch run of the season is approaching.
"We're looking for top-level performances at this time of the season," Director of Track & Field Walt Drenth said. "We need to get some marks that are going to ensure us into fast sections of the conference meet, and maybe for some of us better performances to climb up the national list. We just need to get better, be faster and more competitive. I think we're ready for it."
The Meyo Invitational is one of the premier meets in collegiate indoor track & field, featuring quality competition from across the region. A feature of the event is the famous Meyo Mile on Saturday afternoon, which gives fans a chance to line the track and cheer on the runners in what is always a strong field in the men's and women's version.
The Power Five Invitational provides a chance for the Spartans to see Big Ten competition in Michigan, Minnesota, Indiana and Wisconsin, along with Louisville, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt and Kansas. It will be the third time this season MSU gets a chance to compete inside the U-M Indoor Track Building, which will hold the Big Ten Indoor Championships February 22-23.
"We need to trust the things we've learned over the last three or four weeks," Drenth said. "It will be important for us to stay well, but also for us to get a good point of reference for who we're competing against in the conference and what it's going to take to score. It's managing ourselves primarily. At the end of the day we can't control what other people do, so it's just being the best version of us. We're looking for a good approach and trusting coaches."
With this weekend and next week's Spire Invitational/Commodore Invitational being the last chances to set marks and see how competition stacks up prior to the Big Ten Championships, it's about finding ways to maximize points in the championship setting.
"We would like to see some people get going as we move forward down the stretch," Drenth said. "There are a variety of things we need to see, and for each kid it's got to be a different objective, taking steps forward, being engaged and improving. For each coach, I think that's what we're going for."Â Â Â
