Hoosiers Earn Sweep on IU Senior Night
11/24/2019 2:52:00 PM | Volleyball
Bloomington, Ind. -- Michigan State ran into a determined Indiana team on Sunday in Bloomington, as the Hoosiers took a 3-0 win on their senior day at Wilkinson Hall.
The Spartans (14-14, 5-13 Big Ten) hit .265 in the match, and battled with IU through 28 tie scores and 12 lead changes. MSU was in each set late, but saw surges from the home team carry them over the finish line – especially in the final frame, where Indiana scored four of the final five points on kills.
Biamba Kabengele was dominant for the Spartans, putting down 15 kills without an error and hitting .625, adding a pair of blocks. Naya Gros had five kills and six blocks (two solo), and Meredith Norris had five kills, four digs, and a pair of stuffs.
Seniors Megan Sloan and Kendall Beerman each had 10 kills for Indiana, which is one of just four teams this season to hit .300 or better against MSU. Kamryn Malloy had nine kills, six digs, and hit .583 for Indiana, which improved to 14-17, 3-15 in Conference play.
Michigan State hosts the final weekend of the Big Ten season when it welcomes Purdue (Friday) and Indiana (Saturday) to Jenison Field House.

SET SYNOPSIS
- SET ONE: Naya Gros looked to set the tone for the afternoon with a pair of blocks to start off the match, and extended its lead out to 7-4 with five kills on its first seven swings. IU rallied for three straight to tie things up at 8-8, but Gros stopped the run with a big kill from the middle. IU took its first lead at 10-9 on an MSU miscue, but Kabengele put down back-to-back kills down the left line for the Spartans to retake the lead. The Spartans went back up two at 14-12, but the Hoosiers countered with a 3-0 run on a kill, an ace, and a block, giving the home team a one-point edge and triggering an MSU time out. Norris went off the block out of the break to tie things up, but Kendall Beerman put down consecutive kills and then Emily Fitzner scored IUs second ace of the day to take an 18-15 lead, and the Spartans called their second time out. The Hoosiers extended their run out to five straight to go up 20-15, but Norris and Johnson put down kills from opposite pins to trim the deficit to three. After an Indiana time out, the Hoosiers went back up five on kills from Megan Sloan and Beerman, and got to set point at 24-19. Johnson fended it off with a kill from the right pin, but Kamryn Malloy finished it off for a first-set win. Sloan led the Hoosiers with six terminations as they hit .452 (17-3-31), while MSU hit .400 (15-3-30) and was led by five kills from Kabengele and two kills and two blocks from Gros. MSU out-blocked their hosts 2-1, but IU had a 3-0 edge in service aces.
- SET TWO: Kabengle had three of MSU's first four kills in the second, and IU opened up a 3-0 run that turned a 4-4 tie into a 7-4 lead for the home team. MSU came back with another Kabengele termination followed by an Alford ace to get back within one at 7-6, but the Hoosiers built it back out to three at 11-8. The Hoosiers' hot hitting continued into the second, as they built their three-point edge with 7-1-11 (.545) hitting. MSU tied things up at 13-13, getting a big block of Sloan by Gros and Kabengele followed by a Johnson kill. IU went back up three at 17-14 on a pair of kills by Molloy and one by Hayden Huybers, and the Spartans called time out. After an IU timeout, the Spartans were able to tie things up at 20 after a Norris kill, but Jacqie Arner and Deyshia Lofton put down consecutive terminations to again put the Spartans down two. The Hoosiers handed MSU their next three points with service errors, including one on set point that allowed the Spartans within one at 24-23, but the Spartans returned the favor for IU's 25th point and a 2-0 match lead. Kabengele had six more kills to push her match total to 11, while Gros and Norris each had two kills and a block. MSU hit a respectable .256, but Indiana hit .382 (18-5-34), led y five from Molloy and four from Huybers.
- SET THREE: The teams were tight until a 4-1 Spartan run – fueled by a pair of blocks from Gros and kills by Shklyar and Kabengele – allowed MSU to open up a 13-10 lead, and IU called a time out. The Spartans scored the first two points out of the break to take their largest lead of the day at 16-11. Indiana scored the next three to trim the deficit down to two at 16-14, and it was MSU's turn to call time out. The Spartans committed consecutive errors to allow IU to tie it up at 16-16, MSU went up 19-17 with kill by Swartz and an ace by Monks, but a pair of Spartan errors once again allowed IU to tie it up and allowed the Hoosiers to take the lead on a kill by Sloan. An IU shot long by Beerman was followed by Kabengele and Gros blocking her to take a 21-20 lead, but she got it off the block on her third try to tie things at 21-21. That was the start of a 4-0 Hoosier run (all on kills) that got the home team to match point, but Kabengele put it off the block to fend it off, but XX sealed the senior-day sweep with a kill by Sloan, her 10th of the day.
