Men's Tennis Wraps up Fall Slate at Big Ten Indoors

East Lansing, Mich. - Michigan State's men's tennis team wrapped up the fall season with two wins Sunday afternoon at the Big Ten Indoor individual championships in Lincoln, Neb.
"Great finish to the fall season," said Head Coach Gene Orlando. "We made some great individual improvement. We still have work to do between now and the opening of dual match season Jan. 11, but there is no doubt this team is committed to maximize the offseason to be ready for the opportunities ahead."
In consolation doubles action, the Spartans got things going with a doubles win for junior John Carlin and sophomore Carson Gates over Nebraska's Wickwire and Murayama, 6-2. Gates compiled a singles win for the Spartans over Kristofer Siimar in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Carlin battled with Iowa's Joe Tyler in singles play, falling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 to wrap up the weekend for the Spartans. Freshman Kazuki Matsuno fell to Murayama of Nebraska, 6-1, 6-2.
Saturday Results
MSU put together four wins on the day in consolation play, including three singles wins. Matsuno teamed up with Carlin to knock off Saleh/Wickwire of Nebraska in a tiebreakers, 7-6. Carlin and Gates followed with a 6-3 loss to Cacciatore and Maruyama of Nebraska
Carlin grabbed two singles wins on the day and Gates added another for the Green and White.Carlin took on Michigan's Siimar and rolled in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Gates, from Kansas City, Mo., followed with a straight set (6-2, 6-3) win over Murayama.
Carlin ended the day on a high note, knocking off Martim Vilela of Wisconsin on the last match on of the day. After losing a close first (6-4), Carlin rallied to win the second (7-5) and roll in the match tiebreaker, 10-2, to claim the win.
Elsewhere in singles, Matsuno fell to Saleh of Nebraska, 6-4, 6-3, and freshman Jarreau Campbell lost a close match with Berdusco of Northwestern, 6-4, 6-2.
The Spartans open the dual match season on Jan. 11 when they play host to Toledo at the MSU Indoor Facility.
