EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State tennis used momentum after clinching the doubles point to knock off Toledo, 4-3 , Saturday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. MSU claimed the doubles point and added singles wins on courts two, three and six.
"We'll take the win, it was a tight match from the get-go," said MSU men's tennis head coach Gene Orlando. "The guys worked hard all week and we knew we were going to be in this situation. Just excited that when the big moment came, we were able to be on top. It's going to be tough for the freshmen, their two losses, then obviously at No. 1, you're always going to get their best player and it's going to be a tough spot for us. I know JC (John Carlin) can hold that spot down. It's the freshmen's first dual match, two of the losses we had were two freshmen. The upperclassmen have been around and kind of know what to expect. We were in both those matches, those were matches we easily could of won. Back to work, and keep on getting the opportunities."
The Spartans got things going early in doubles action on court three, with junior Josh Mukherjee and freshman Kazuki Matsuno rolling past Nikola Arsic and Max Skaer, 6-1. The Rockets answered on court one, with Danilo Vukotic and Filip Zupancic earning a 6-2 win over sophomore Anthony Pero and junior John Carlin. It was a back and forth battle on court two with MSU freshmen Drew Keene and Jarreau Campbell taking on Cole Shouts and Krzysztof Wetoszka. The pairs traded games early and often before going to a tiebreaker. Keene and Campbell raced out to a 4-2 lead and took the match, 7-6(4) and the doubles point for the Spartans.
MSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a win on court two by Pero. Pero claimed the first set over Shoults, 6-3, before rolling to a 6-0 win in the second set for the win. Toledo got on the board after a 6-3, 6-3 win by Vukotic over Carlin in the top slot.
Mukherjee, who started on court six for the Spartans, answered with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Skaer. The 6-foot-5 junior took an early advantage over Skaer in the first on his way to a 6-2 finish. Mukherjee fell behind early in the second, but bounced with a 6-4 second set win to push MSU's lead to 3-1.
Gates competed on court three and clinched the match for the Spartans with a grind-it-out win over Wetoszka. Gates fell behind early in the first set before forcing a tiebreaker. The sophomore from Kansas City, Missouri rolled in the tiebreaker, 7-1, and opened up the second set with a big lead on his way to a 6-3 win.
The Rockets finished the match with two wins on courts four and five. Keene and Campbell, competing in their first collegiate dual matches, fell to Zupancic (7-6[2], 7-6[8]) and Luis Kleinschnitz (4-6, 7-5, 6-3), respectively.
The Spartans are next in action on Friday, Jan. 17 at Middle Tennessee State. Action begins at 5 p.m. at the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
