Two weeks out from the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City, the Spartans are looking to assemble entries and put together the best team for scoring points in the postseason.
"We're going to start to get kind of exclusive, our responsibilities are to score points and field the best team we can in the championship season," Director of track & field Walt Drenth said. "That's sort of what our mentality has been as a coaching staff. We have some events that are congested and we have some others that are wide open."
With just a couple of weeks before the start of the postseason and a big group of athletes coming off success in their primary events last week at the Virginia Challenge, the Spartans will hold out a group of athletes from competition this weekend.
"We will mainly rest a group of distance runners, and most of them ran their primary events last week," Drenth said. "We feel like their momentum is really good right now and we can get more out of them with a couple of hard practices rather than going to race again."
The Spartans collected several personal bests and top marks a week ago in Virginia, including wins from junior Nick Guerrant (men's decathlon), junior Carlyn Arteaga (women's 800-meter invite) and senior Justine Kiprotich (men's 1,500-meter invite).
Guerrant tallied 7,632 points in his first decathlon of the year, to take the win and post the eighth-best mark in the country so far this season. He earned Men's Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors for his efforts in what included adverse conditions with the weather.
Arteaga clocked 2:07.61 after passing two runners down the home stretch to cross the line first, and Kiprotich powered through the bell, extending his lead on the final lap to run to a new personal record and top-15 time in the country this season at 3:41.89.
"I think we just need to keep getting better as we move forward," Drenth said. "The weather looks like it will be pretty favorable this weekend and our job is to take the things we did well last week and stay with them. We need to take the things we can continue to adjust and make those adjustments when we get to competition. Building momentum into the conference meet is really important, so we're still looking for growth from all of our groups."
