PULLMAN, Washington – The Michigan State men's golf team moved up three spots in the final round of the NCAA Pullman Regional on Wednesday, finishing in seventh place at 12-under-par 828 (273-283-272). Unfortunately for the Spartans, Wednesday's program-record 8-under-par 272 wasn't enough to get them into the top five to earn a berth in next week's NCAA Championships.

Texas A&M (33-under-par 807), BYU (31-under-par 809), Oklahoma (30-under-par 810), Georgia Tech (22-under-par 818) and Colorado State (21-under-par 819), finished in the first through fifth spots at Palouse Ridge Golf Club, respectively, earning the region's qualifiers for the NCAA finals.
Senior Donnie Trosper ended the tournament tied for seventh place, which was the best finish by a Spartan at an NCAA regional since Heath Fell was first at the Central Regional in 1993. All three of Trosper's rounds this week were in the 60s as he finished 9-under-par 201 (65-69-67), which was the lowest 54-hole tournament score in program history.
"He had a great week," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said. "He was steady and kept it in front of him and kept himself in each round. It was a great way for him to go out."
The first-team All-Big Ten honoree who transferred to Michigan State for his final season, closed his MSU career with a 3-under-par 67 on Wednesday that included five birdies.
"What a great addition to our program this year," Lubahn said. "He had one of the best seasons in school history. I'm so proud he came home to finish his college career."
The Spartans' climb to seventh place on Wednesday was largely due to their play on the back nine. The team combined for just three bogeys on the final nine holes and had 16 birdies in all on the day.
It marked the second straight year MSU finished seventh at an NCAA regional, which ties the best finish in school history.
"I think yesterday is one of those days we grow from," Lubahn said. "Today was a testament to our culture – we fought until the last putt went in. I'm proud of this group; every group is different and this was one of the more entertaining to coach."
Andrew Walker was one of three Spartans to card their lowest round of the tournament on Wednesday, as the junior was 2-under-par 68. Walker bogeyed his first hole of the day – the 10th – but then birdied three of the next five holes, making the turn at 2-under-par. The junior had 12 consecutive pars to end the day.
Walker finished tied for 37th at 1-under-par 209 (70-71-68).
James Piot (71-70-69) and Troy Taylor II (69-73-68) tied for 40th place at even-par 210.
Piot was even at the turn and 1-under-par on the back to turn in a 1-under-par 69 on Wednesday.
Taylor tied his career best with a 2-under-par 68 in the final round with the help of two birdies and seven pars over the final nine holes.
Kaleb Johnson carded a 3-over-par 73, finishing 7-over-par 217 (69-75-73) and tied for 57th place.
Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara earned the Region's lone individual bid to the NCAA finals, finishing second at 13-under-par 197.
