The Spartans will compete at the Panorama Farms Invitational on Friday and the Buckeye Preview Meet on Saturday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's and women's cross country will travel to the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational and the Buckeye Preview Meet this weekend. Members of the team will travel to Earlysville, Virginia on Friday, Sept. 27, for the Panorama Farms Invitational, hosted by the University of Virginia. Runners will also travel to Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 28, for the Buckeye Preview Meet.
Â
With two races this weekend, many Spartan runners will have the opportunity to compete – younger and veteran runners alike.
Â
"I think every time we go somewhere, whether it's in-state or out-of-state, there's an opportunity to learn something," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Walt Drenth said. "We want to see a little bit more of what our team's made of. We're hoping to find a high level of competition at both of those places and just see people grow; that's really critical for us as we get better."
Â
The men's 8K race will begin at 9:30 a.m., with the women's 6K following at 10:15 a.m., from Panorama Farms on Friday morning.
Â
Abdi Ahmed, Morgan Beadlescomb, Ty Buckley, Jeremy Kloss, Winter Romeyn, Aden Smith, Josh Smith, Matthew Thomas, Fraser Wilson and Zacary Wright-Fisher are the Spartan representatives running at Panorama Farms. For the Spartan women, Noelle Adriaens, Lauren Cleary, Maggie Farrell, Annie Fuller, India Johnson, Sarah Kettel, Jenna Magness, Makayla Perez, Jeralyn Poe, Lindsey Rudden and Karrigan Smith will take the course.
Â
The men's field boasts 18 teams, including the Spartans and No. 22-ranked Virginia. On the women's side, the No. 11-ranked Spartans are joined by 15 other teams, including the host school Virginia who received votes in the latest poll.
Â
On Saturday morning, the men's 8K race will begin at 9 a.m. and the women will take the course for the 6K race at 9:45 a.m. at the Ohio State University Golf Club.
Â
Brenden Allen, Luke Beauchamp, Avery Felty, Brayden Law, John Petruno and Steven Stine will race on the men's side at Ohio State. Carlyn Arteaga, Lidia Clarizio, Karenna Duffey, Amanda George, Melanie Helder, Claire Kendell, Courtney Krupp, Katie Osika, Stephanie Vanis and Kayla Wiitala will take the course for the women's 6K.
Â
Michigan State will see the first glimpse of fellow Big Ten teams, host school Ohio State, Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern (women only), Penn State and Rutgers. On the women's side, the No. 11-ranked women's team is joined by ranked opponents, No. 7 Michigan, No. 21 Ohio State, No. 16 Penn State and Illinois who received votes. For the men, No. 16 Michigan is the only ranked team in the field.
Â
The course at the Ohio State University Golf Club will be in the spotlight once again in five weeks when the Ohio State hosts the 2019 Big Ten Championships on Sunday, Nov. 3.
Â
The Spartans are coming off a first-place sweep at the 39th annual Auto-Owners Spartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13. First-place finishes by Morgan Beadlescomb on the men's side and Jeralyn Poe for the women's team highlighted the team's only home meet of the season at Forest Akers Golf Course.
Â
Beadlescomb broke the tape in the men's 8K race, covering the course in 24:24.9, which was the fastest time by a Spartan at Forest Akers since 2013.
Â
In the women's race, nine out of the first 10 women's finishers were Spartans, led by Poe, Annie Fuller and India Johnson who crossed the line first.
Â
"I think leadership is mostly about behavior, just being in a calm place and exploring what their best looks like on that day. If we are consistent in those behaviors, we think we have a chance to be really good," Drenth said. "I think just continuing to set patterns of expectation; all those things are important when we go to any meet. I think that especially early in the season, those expectations have to be consistent because when we get to championship, we want to be locked in and not be distracted by the next thing. Right now, we just want to compete our best."
