"The men's side, we got what we needed; Virginia has a really good squad," Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Walt Drenth said. "There were some really good individuals on the women's side, better than the Spartan Invitational because we scored 15 points there; I was happy with what we got with it. We're a good team and when you have eight in the top 16, that's what good teams do until you get to a really high level. You can go around the country and not find a team that's as competitive as us."
The Spartan women raced to their third consecutive first-place finish to begin the season. The women were led by senior Annie Fuller, who placed second in the 6k race, clocking in at 20:25.3. Last time out, Fuller placed third at the Spartan Invitational with a time of 21:12.6.
Along with Fuller, eight other Spartan runners placed in the top 20 with seven posting season-bests. Senior Jeralyn Poe clocked in at 20:39.9, also improving from the last meet, to join Fuller among the top five finishers.
Lindsey Rudden posted a time of 21:00.3 to close out the first 10 runners. Jenna Magness (12th - 21:03.7), Noelle Adriaens - running her first race as a Spartan (13th - 21:04.8), India Johnson (14th - 21:07.2) and Sarah Kettle (15th - 21:08.1) rounded out the scoring for the first-place Spartans.
Makayla Perez placed 16th with a time of 21:10.1 and Maggie Farrell posted a time of 21:21.4 for 19th, to close out the top 20 finishers.
Lauren Cleary (23rd - 21:26.5) and Karrigan Smith (28th – 21:41.5) closed out the Spartan runners for the women's side.
"On both sides, I think we made some really good rookie mistakes. By that I mean they were aggressive maybe more brutally than they should've been, but they're behaving like people who want to be good," Drenth said. "From the coaches' and my standpoint, that's really important; they're not tentative. Some of being good is just feeling like you can go up there and run with the good people. I thought they handled themselves well for the first real competition."
In the men's race, Morgan Beadlescomb broke the tape for the second-straight meet, clocking in at 23:58.7. Beadlescomb improved on his 8K time of 24:24.9 from the Spartan Invitational on Sept. 13, to lead the Spartan men to a second-place finish, only behind No. 22-ranked Virginia.

The next Spartan across the line was Abdi Ahmed, who clocked in at 24:22.7, to place 12th.
Matthew Thomas and Winter Romeyn rounded out the top-25 runners for Michigan State, both improving on their times from the Spartan Invitational two weeks ago. Thomas placed 20th with a time of 24:43.5 and Romeyn followed with a 22nd place finish, clocking in at 24:44.0, both with season-bests.
Ty Buckley (44th) and Josh Smith (45th) rounded out the scoring for the Spartans, to contribute to the team's second-place finish. Buckley improved his season-best by almost 30 seconds, to clock in at 25:09.7. Smith, who ran unattached at the Spartan Invitational, ran his first race for the Spartans and posted a time of 25:13.4.
Freshmen Aden Smith (51st – 25:20.5), Fraser Wilson (78th – 25:53.7) and Jeremy Kloss (93rd – 26:08.4) closed out the Spartan runners in the men's 8k.
"I'm excited about both groups to move forward, and we have three weeks until we get a real big test at Wisconsin and we just have to keep growing," Drenth said.
UP NEXT: Another group of Spartans will compete at the Buckeye Preview Meet on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will take place at the Ohio State University Golf Club, which is the 2019 Big Ten Championship course. The men's 8k race is set to begin at 9 a.m., with the women's 6k following at 9:45 a.m.
