EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State fell to No. 10 Indiana, 24-0, Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.
The Hoosiers (4-0) outgained the Spartans, 433-191, to remain undefeated on the season. MSU shut out Indiana in the second half and limited the Hoosiers to a season-low 24 points, but couldn't overcome the halftime deficit.
Senior linebacker Antjuan Simmons led the Spartans (1-3) with a career-high 14 tackles, including a 1-yard tackle for loss, while senior defensive end Jacub Panasiuk also had a career-high nine stops to go along with an 8-yard sack. Redshirt junior cornerback Shakur Brown recorded a career-high two interceptions to become the first Spartan to have two picks in the same game since David Dowell against Penn State in 2017.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Payton Thorne, in his second collegiate game, relieved starter Rocky Lombardi in the second quarter and completed 10-of-20 passes for 110 yards and one interception. Redshirt sophomore Jayden Reed led MSU with seven catches for 63 yards.
Hoosier quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was 25-of-38 passing for 320 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, while Stevie Scott had 23 carries for 84 yards.
"Obviously, turnovers and penalties in the first half, against any type of team, any team, you do not give yourself a chance," said MSU head coach Mel Tucker. "That's basically the story of the game. Guys continue to play hard, we had a shutout in the second half, defense continued to play hard, but we lost the battle of field position.
"We're going to continue to move forward with our process, which we believe in, which is, stick with the facts, see what happened, look at the film, identify the mistakes and make the corrections – structural, mental or physical."
Indiana got on the board first, taking advantage of an interception, and drove 50 yards on seven plays to take a 7-0 lead, capped by a Scott 8-yard TD rush with 2:11 left in the first quarter.
The Spartans turned the ball over again on a fumble on their next series, giving IU excellent field position at the 16-yard line, and the Hoosiers capitalized two plays later as Penix found Ty Fryfogle in the end zone for a 16-yard scoring strike. Fryfogle finished the game with 11 catches for 200 yards.
Brown recorded his second pick of the game early in the second quarter, this time in the end zone, to thwart a potential Indiana scoring drive, but Lombardi threw his second interception of the game on the next play, and IU ended up with a field goal to take a 17-0 lead with 9:22 left in the half.
Indiana extended its lead to 24-0 at the 4:56 mark in the second quarter as Penix connected with Fryfogle for a 65-yard TD pass.
Neither team scored in the second half, although Indiana had several scoring chances. MSU stopped IU twice on fourth down inside the 10-yard line in the second half.
Michigan State returns to action Saturday, Nov. 21 to face Maryland in College Park.
