Â
The Covid-19 pandemic has altered the look of schedules not only in volleyball, but throughout college athletics at every level. The spring 2021 volleyball slate begins the weekend of January 22-24, and will feature two-game series each weekend (five home, five away) against the same opponent, and one split week with a close opponent.Â
Â
Michigan State's five home opponents are Ohio State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Penn State and Rutgers, while taking on Minnesota, Maryland, Northwestern, Purdue, and Iowa on the road. The Spartans will also have a home-and-home series against Michigan, taking on the Wolverines at home in a midweek tilt (January 28) and then heading to Ann Arbor to finish the series two days later.Â
Â
In this scheduling format, the Spartans have two "non-plays" – MSU will not play Nebraska or Indiana.Â
Â
The Spartans open on the road at Minnesota on January 23-24, and come back with the State Pride Flag series a week later against Michigan. MSU hosts the Wolverines on Thursday, Jan. 28 and make the return trip on Saturday, Jan. 30. MSU plays its first home series against Ohio State (Feb. 5-6), and then heads to Maryland on Feb. 12-13 before back to-back home weekends against Wisconsin (Feb. 20-21) and Illinois (Feb. 27-28).Â
Â
MSU is on the road three of the four weekends in March, beginning with the two-game set at Northwestern (March 5-6), followed by a trip to Purdue (March 12-13). Penn State comes to town the weekend of March 19-20, before MSU goes to Iowa March 26-27. The Spartans close out the regular season when they host Rutgers April 2-3.Â
Â
NCAA selections will be made on April 4. The NCAA Tournament field will be reduced for the spring of 2021 – just 48 teams will participate (down from 64 in most recent years). 32 teams will participate via automatic qualifier, with 16 at-large selections.Â
Â
Game times and television information will be announced in the near future, and all dates and times are subject to change. For the most up-to-date information, be sure to check MSUSpartans.com.Â
