Spartans Lose Walkoff Heartbreaker to Pitt
2/14/2020 9:04:00 PM | Softball
Clemson, SC --Â Michigan State dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Pitt in the first game of the Big Ten-ACC Challenge at Clemson on Friday night.Â
Â
With a 2-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans got the first two outs of the inning before a double, error, and single up the middle plated two runs for the Panthers (3-3).Â
Â
In a game that was a pitcher's duel, MSU broke through in the top of the fourth on a two-run RBI double from Courtney Callahan.  Pitt finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back base hits to lead off the inning, but could only get one runner across on a sac fly and entered the seventh inning still trailing by a run.Â
Â
Freshman southpaw Sarah Ladd got her fourth start of the season, striking out five and retiring 11 straight batters from the first through the fifth inning. She scattered six base hits – including two in the sixth and two in the seventh in 6.2 innings pitched. Â
Â
Pitt pitcher Brittany Knight started in the circle and racked up nine strikeouts but also delivered five walks in her complete game effort. Third baseman Morgan Batesole went 2-for-3, including driving in the winning run with a single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh. Hunter Levesque also had a 2-for-3 effort at the plate.Â
Â
Michigan State takes on Pitt on Saturday at 3 pm to continue the Big Ten-ACC Challenge, then battles host Clemson at 5:30 pm.  Â

- Both of Courtney Callahan's base hits this season are doubles.Â
- Sarah Ladd posted her longest outing of the season in the circle. She made her fourth start in MSU's fifth game overall.Â
