Spartans Explode for 11-3 Win Over Pitt

Clemson, SC -- A six-run rally in the fifth inning propelled MSU to a 11-3 victory over Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Spartans put together a season-best 13 base hits, including three from Courtney Callahan and two each for Katie Quinlan, Erica Holt, and Kennedy Wyllie.
MSU scored twice in the first to erase a 1-0 Pitt lead, tying it on a Caitie Ladd homer and going ahead 2-1 on an RBI single by Courtney Callahan. Erica Holt and Callahan each had RBI singles in the fourth to push the Spartan lead out to 4-1. The teams each scored one in the fourth and Pitt added one in the fifth to make it a 5-3 ballgame. MSU ripped off five straight hits to start off the bottom of the fifth inning, exploding for six runs in the frame to end the game via run rule.
Callahan went 3-for-3 with a pair of RBI, adding a stolen base. Shae Schreckengost delivered the decisive blow with a two-run single up the middle t end the game, and Caitie Ladd also had a pair of RBI, including a leadoff homer.
Leah Shipp earned her first victory of the season, scattering six hits over three innings and allowing two earned runs. Walker tossed two innings of one-hit relief, striking out two.
Kaitlyn Pavlik had a pair of base hits for the Panthers (4-4), as Pitt strung together seven hits on the day.
Michigan State takes on Clemson Saturday evening, and then concludes the Big Ten-ACC Challenge on Sunday when it plays the host Tigers again at 12:30 pm.

STATS AND STORYLINES
- Shipp got the first two outs of the inning, but then gave up a single to Katlyn Pavlik and a double to Kaitlyn Kruger to give the Panthers the early lead in the contest. She got Conor McGaffic to line out to first to end the inning
- Caitie Ladd sent a 3-1 pitch over the wall in left center to tie the game just one batter into the bottom of the first. Katie Quinlan walked and stole second, and two batters later Erica Holt also got a free pass. Courtney Callahan singled into the hole at second to plate Quinlan to push it to 2-1.
- A pair of base hits and a fielder's choice had runners at first and second with one out for the Panthers in the top of the second
- In the bottom of the third, Shae Schreckengost reached on a one-out walk, and then pinch runner came around to score on a double by Holt. Callahan singled for her second hit (and RBI) of the day to push MSU's lead out to 4-1.
- Alli Walker came out of the bullpen with a runner on second and none out in the fourth, and picked up two quick outs – but the leadoff runner scored to trim the lead to 4-2. Walker got a line ball to third to end the inning.
- MSU threatened again in the bottom of the fourth, as Kennedy Wyllie led off with a base hit to center and Caitie Ladd walked for the second time in the game. An infield single by Quinlan loaded the bases, and a sac fly by Katelyn Hendershott brought home Wyllie from third for a 5-2 advantage.
- Pitt got a run back to make it 5-3 in the top of the fifth. A one-out walk turned into a run on a two-out single by McGaffic.
- MSU put together five straight base hits to start ff the fifth, pushing the Spartan lead out to 7-2. Caitie Ladd brought home an eighth run with a ground ball to second, which left two runners in scoring position with one out. Quinlan brought home a ninth run to make it 9-3 and then stole second, and Shae Schreckengost delivered the two-run single to end the game in the bottom of the frame. .
- Caitie Ladd's homer was her first of the season and 15th of her career.
- Leah Shipp started the game and went 3.0 innings in the circle, allowing ne walk and one earned run.
- The Spartans tallied a season-best 13 hits in the game, its most since the opener vs. Cal when it had nine.
