Spartans Shoot 2-Over-Par in Opening Round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate

DORADO, PUERTO RICO – The Michigan State men's golf team is tied for ninth place after the opening round of the Dorado Beach Collegiate at TPC Dorado in Puerto Rico. The Spartans shot a 2-over-par 290 on the 7,112-yard Sugarcane Course.

No. 21 Louisville leads the tournament at 19-under-par 269 and is seven shots ahead of second-place Kansas.
Freshman Bradley Smithson led all Spartans with a 2-under-par 70 and is tied for 15th place. Smithson was 3-under-par at the turn and was one of two Spartans to record an eagle on Sunday, doing so on the par-5, 502-yard 14th hole. He parred eight of nine holes to end the day.
Landon Ernst carded an even-par 72. He was 1-over at the turn, but picked up a stroke on the back nine and is tied for 33rd place.
James Piot and Troy Taylor II both turned in 2-over-par 74s. Taylor was the other Spartan to pick up an eagle on Sunday as, like Ernst, he did so on the par-5 14th hole.
Andrew Walker shot a 3-over-par 75.
John Murphy of Louisville and Ben Sigel of Kansas are tied for the lead at 7-under-par 65.
Monday's second round is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. ET with a shotgun start.
