Late Rally by Montana Sinks Spartans
2/29/2020 4:58:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, Calif. – A six-run rally for Montana blew open a scoreless game as Michigan State fell to the Grizzlies, 6-0, in a Saturday contest as part of the Amy S. Harrison Tournament at UC-Riverside.
The game was a scoreless tie entering the bottom of the sixth inning, with both pitchers stepping up to do their part for their teams – Sarah Ladd had struck out three and scattered six base hits to that point, while Tristin Achenbach had struck out six Spartans and allowed just five base hits. MSU had stranded eight runners in the game, and Montana seven.
The deciding inning came in the bottom of the sixth for the Griz (9-9), with two on via a pair of base hits from McKenna Tjaden and Kendall Curtis and one out. Freshman Ashley Ward stepped in as a pinch hitter and homered over the wall in left center. Two more base hits and a triple by Maygen McGrath tacked two more runs onto the scoreboard for Montana, and a double by Morgan Johnson brought home another run. In all, it was six runs on seven base hits in the frame against Sarah Ladd, who hadn't given up more than two earned runs in any of her previous eight starts (10 appearances) this season. Alli Walker came in from the bullpen to get the final out of the inning.
The Spartans dropped their third straight game, falling to 3-12 overall on the season. Sarah Ladd takes the loss in the circle, going 5.2 innings and surrendering 12 hits. MSU had five base hits off the Montana starter Acenbach, but none after the fourth inning.
Freshman Camryn Wincher had two of MSU's five base hits on the day, her first multiple-hit game of her career. Shae Schreckengost extended her hitting streak to a career-best four games, in which she has five base knocks. Caitie Ladd and Joanna Bartz had the other base hits for the Spartans.
Morgan Johnson led Montana with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate, while both Cami Sellers and Anne Mari Petrino had two base hits on the day.
The Spartans will wrap up the Amy S. Harrison tournament on Sunday with a pair of games, starting at noon ET with a rematch against Friday opponent Omaha before tangling with tournament host UC-Riverside in the nightcap.
