Highlanders Explode Late For Win Over MSU
3/6/2020 7:35:00 PM | Softball
Riverside, Calif – UC-Riverside used a four-run sixth inning to defeat Michigan State 9-1 in six innings on Friday afternoon.
The Highlanders (9-12) avenged a 10-1 run-rule win by Michigan State last Sunday in the first Spring Break meeting of the teams. The Spartans were completing their fourth game within 24 hours – MSU played a doubleheader against California Baptist on Thursday that began at 5 pm PT, earned a 6-2 win over CSU-Bakersfield to start the day, and competed this game at 4:25 pm PT. The Spartans were enjoying 80-degree temperatures on Friday for the doubleheader against the two California schools.
The home team scored single runs off starter Sarah Ladd in the first, second, and third innings, and two more in the fifth. Reliever Alli Walker surrendered the four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Highlanders exploded for five base hits (with some help from a pair of Spartan errors).
MS (6-15), despite eight base hits, was held to a single run, a solo homer by Joanna Bartz in the top of the sixth that trimmed the UCR lead down to 5-1. Katie Quinlan and Erica Holt each had two base hits in the game.
Danielle Ortega, Marissa Burk, and Nadia Witt each had two base hits for the Highlanders, who saw each starter have at least one hit on the day for a total of 16, the most hits surrendered by MSU in a game this season. Chrys Hildebrand was the starter for UCR and went 5.1 innings, with Caitlyn Rivera coming on in relief after Bartz' homer in the sixth.
The Spartans have one final game on their spring break schedule, a battle with Southern Utah on Saturday on the campus of California Baptist. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm PT (4 pm ET).
