EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State strength and conditioning coaches Molli Munz and Lorenzo Guess have been named Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa). This honor is the highest given in the strength and conditioning coaching profession, and the ceremony is undoubtedly the highlight of the association's National Conference each year.
Master Strength and Conditioning Coach and former MSU head strength and conditioning head coach Ken Mannie will present Munz and Guess with the blue MSCC Jacket on Thursday evening, May 6, 2021, in Fort Worth, Texas, at the 2021 CSCCa National Conference due to the cancellation of the 2020 CSCCa National Conference as a result of COVID-19.
Munz and Guess are two of 23 collegiate strength & conditioning coaches that received the prestigious title by the CSCCa this spring.
The prestigious honors recognizing Munz and Guess now give Michigan State Athletics three Master Strength and Conditioning Coaches by the CSCCa, joining Associate Head Strength & Conditioning Coach/Director of Sport Science Mike Vorkapich.
Munz, M.S., C.S.C.S, USAW, is the Director of Strength and Conditioning for Olympic Sports. She has been a member of the Spartan Strength and Conditioning Staff since 2008.
Over the years, Munz has gained a vast amount of knowledge and experience in strength and conditioning. Prior to her current position she served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at the University of Michigan. For two and a half years she oversaw the strength and conditioning programs for nine sports. Before she arrived at the University of Michigan, she spent a year as a strength and conditioning intern at Ohio State University.
Munz earned her Bachelor of Science degree in health-fitness from Central Michigan University. While obtaining her degree, she competed as a member of the women's basketball team. She was a four-year starter and two year captain. After she finished her basketball career, she got her start in strength and conditioning at Michigan State as a graduate assistant from 2002-2004. While working for the Spartans, she earned a Master of Science degree in kinesiology.
Munz runs a summer conditioning program that is second to none in order to prepare student-athletes for the physical demands of volleyball in the Big Ten Conference. The strength & conditioning staff uses a state-of-the-art weight training facility that features some of the finest equipment around. With plenty of free weights and apparatuses, Munz is able to help student-athletes achieve new heights in strength and muscle tone, leaping and attack ability, along with adding great flexibility and improving recovery time.
Guess is the associate head strength and conditioning coach. Guess, a former Michigan State safety, is in his ninth year on staff at MSU. Guess is a certified strength and conditioning coach (SCCC) by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (CSCCa) and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). He is also certified by USA Weightlifting as a level one sports performance coach.
In addition, Guess serves as the Director of Player Enrichment, which includes coordinating and supervising the "Overtime" player development program. Since 2012, Guess has worked closely with Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Engagement Elliott Daniels in directing all aspects of player development programming for football.
Guess has 14 years of experience as a strength and conditioning coach at the collegiate level. Since Guess' arrival as a full-time staff member, the Spartans have won two Big Ten Championships (2013, 2015) and played in seven bowl games, including three BCS/New Year's Six bowls (2014 Rose, 2015 Cotton, 2015 CFP Semifinal at Cotton Bowl).
A native of Wayne, Michigan, Guess spent two seasons (2010-11) as an assistant director of strength and conditioning at Notre Dame while working with head coach Brian Kelly. Guess also worked with Kelly for one season at Cincinnati as a tight ends coach, helping the Bearcats to a 12-1 record in 2009 and an appearance in the Sugar Bowl following UC's second straight BIG EAST Championship.
Prior to coaching at Cincinnati, Guess worked on the strength and conditioning staffs at South Florida (2009), Alcorn State (2008), Kentucky State (2007), Cincinnati (2006) and Tiffin (2005). Guess served as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at South Florida while working with the men's basketball team for one season, and was the head strength and conditioning coach at Alcorn State. In 2007, Guess was the secondary coach at Kentucky State and doubled as the football strength and conditioning coach. He held the same positions in 2005 at Tiffin.
Guess earned a bachelor's degree from Michigan State in 2002 and graduated from Tiffin University in 2007 with a master's degree in business administration. An Academic All-Big Ten selection in 1998, Guess is currently finishing his doctoral program with the United States Sports Academy. His research involves methods on how to successfully develop student-athletes holistically on and off the field of competition.
While at Michigan State, Guess was a four-year letterwinner in football (1998-2001) and also earned two letters with the basketball team. As a safety, Guess helped Michigan State defeat Florida in the 2000 Citrus Bowl and Fresno State in the 2001 Silicon Valley Bowl. He was part of two Big Ten titles and an NCAA Final Four appearance (1999) with the Spartan basketball team. Guess, who played in 45 career games and recorded 111 tackles, tallied a career-high 47 tackles, six pass break-ups and four interceptions as a senior in 2001. In 1999, Guess was one of the components on a defense that ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten in rushing defense, and during the 2000 season, MSU led the conference in both total defense and pass defense.
