Spartans Drop Series Finale at Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pennsylvania – Penn State broke a 1-1 tie with two second-period goals and went on to defeat the Michigan State hockey team 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Pegula Ice Arena.
"I thought we played really well in the first and got some things done and I thought in the second we weren't very good," MSU head coach Danton Cole said. "In the third, the guys worked very, very hard and just couldn't get one to go. When we work hard, we have a chance, and when we don't work hard, we don't. It shouldn't be a hard lesson to learn but it seems like it's one we have to keep learning."
The Nittany Lions (7-7, 5-7-0-1-0-0) opened the scoring 4:45 into the opening period. Evan Bell took the puck at the left point, worked his way down and snapped a low shot that found its way through Drew DeRidder.
The Spartans (5-7-2, 4-7-1-2-1-0) were able to tie the game with 2:26 to go in the first when Charlie Combs collected a loose puck in front and backhanded it in. Dennis Cesana got the puck to Tommy Apap in the slot, who sent it toward the net. The puck bounced out to Combs, who was between the bottom of the right circle and the crease, and he backhanded it past goaltender Oskar Autio for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Penn State reclaimed the lead, 2-1, with a power-play goal 5:57 into the second period. The Nittany Lions were able to capitalize on their final rush up ice of the power play as Aarne Talvitie tipped in a pass from Kevin Wall with one second remaining on the man-advantage.
The Nittany Lions upped their lead to 3-1 with just under seven minutes to go in the second period when Wall jammed in a rebound from off the right side of the crease.
The Spartans appeared to make it a one-goal game with under a minute to play in the middle stanza when Jagger Joshua got his stick on a loose puck and pushed it across the goal line. However, the officials reviewed the play and the goal call on the ice was overturned.
Autio stopped all 11 shots the Spartans threw at him in the third and finished with 21 saves. DeRidder made 32 stops.
Michigan State will return to Munn next weekend to host Ohio State on Saturday (BTN) and Sunday.
