Michigan State looks to continue its momentum after a successful opening weekend.
EAST LANSING , Mich. - Michigan State track & field returns to action traveling to Bloomington, Indiana for the Gladstein Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 23, hosted by Indiana University.
The Spartans will travel with a smaller group for this meet with pole vaulters and distance runners competing. Last week, MSU started the indoor season strong with 11 personal bests and four event titles at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
"I would like to see them focus on their behavior, self-management and engagement with one another. We are making progress in overall program growth and can continue to do so. Each day is vital that they make choices to keep themselves safe as well as one another," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa (Senakiewich) Breznau said. "Given the unknown due to covid-19, our student-athletes should seize each opportunity to practice or compete by bringing their best self and controlling their environment."
Â
This week, the women's meet will be first beginning at 10 a.m. with the 60m hurdles. The final event will be the women's 4x400m relay at 11:55 a.m. Juniors Sophia Franklin and Calli Ostapowicz will be in action in the pole vault for the Spartans. Franklin won the event last week at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational with a height of 4.06m.
On the men's side, the meet will commence at 1:30 p.m. with the 60m hurdles and conclude with the 4x400m relay at 3:45 p.m. Junior Trevor Stephenson is set to pole vault at 2:45 p.m. Last week, he took second with a vault of 4.92m. MSU will have four athletes competing in the men's 3,000m race. Freshmen Brendan Favazza, Andrew Nolan and Alexander Penski join sophomore James Uhlenberg in their first race of the season.
"It's important that our student-athletes keep things simple as we travel and focus on what they can control, as well as continue to practice best policy around covid-19 prevention," Breznau added. "Coming off our first competition, I was impressed with our ability to compete at a high level and look forward to our momentum this weekend. One thing we are certain of, Coach (Walt) Drenth's legacy and philosophies are present and were on display at our first meet."
After the Gladstein Invitational, the Spartans will return to Ann Arbor with a selected group taking part in the B1G Multis on Jan. 29.Â
The Michigan State cross country team will also be in action traveling to Shelbyville, Indiana for the Big Ten Championships on Jan. 30.
