Michigan State Falls to No. 3 Wisconsin Friday

Michigan State fell on Friday night to No. 3 Wisconsin, 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18) inside Jenison Fieldhouse.
The Spartans move to 8-8 overall with a 1-6 mark in conference play, while Wisconsin is now 14-1 and 6-1 in the Big Ten with tonight's win.
Sarah Franklin led the Spartans with nine kills and added eight digs, narrowly missing a double-double. Naya Gros had seven kills and two blocks, leading MSU with a .462 hitting percentage. Celia Cullen's fifth double-double of the season came from 18 assists and 11 digs, three short of her season high.
Michigan State came up with over 100 attacking attempts to Wisconsin's 93. The Badgers held a narrow advantage in digs with 40, one more than Michigan State's total. The Spartans led 3-2 in service aces and totaled just three service errors while Wisconsin had six.
The Spartans are back in action tomorrow night, hosting Maryland midway through a four-match homestand at Jenison Fieldhouse.

• SET ONE: Behind the strength of the Izzone campout crowd, the Spartans came out hot. The Spartans used a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead early on. During the run three different MSU players earned kills, including Franklin, Monks and Max-Brown. The Badgers showed why they are ranked No. 3 with a 6-0 run of their own to take control of the set, 18-12. In the first set, the offense was provided by Franklin and Max-Brown, who both had four kills.
• SET TWO: In the second set, the Badgers wasted no time jumping out to an early 10-3 advantage, leading to a MSU timeout. Wisconsin had an answer to every Michigan State mini-run and cruised to a 25-10 set victory. In the frame, the Badgers hit. 348 led by five kills by Devyn Robinson. Conversely, the Spartans hit -.167 in the second set and were hampered by 12 attack errors.
• SET THREE: The third set was a tight affair with neither team taking more than a three-point lead half way through the set. After an emphatic kill by Max-Brown the Spartans trimmed the Badger lead to 10-9. After a massive block by Franklin and Gros, MSU tied the score at 14 apiece. Wisconsin ended the match with a 5-0 run to secure the sweep. MSU had its best hitting percentage in the third set, hitting .088.
