Three Among Top-20 as Spartans are Fifth at Fighting Irish Classic

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State men's golf team shot an even-par 560 over two rounds and is in fifth place among 14 teams after the first day of play at the Fighting Irish Classic in South Bend, Ind. The two-day, 54-hole event is being played on the par-71, 7,023-yard Warren Golf Course.
The Spartans fired a 6-under par 274 in the first round and were in third place before posting a 6-over par 286 in the second round to finish at even-par 560.
Washington leads the field of 14 teams at 13-under par 547, including an 11-under par 269 in the first round. Host Notre Dame is second at 6-under par 554, with Utah third at 5-under par 555 and Kent State in fourth place at 3-under par 557.

MSU has three players among the top-20 overall, led by freshman Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic), who is tied for 12th place at 1-under par 139. He fired a 2-under par 68 in the opening round.
Seniors James Piot (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and Troy Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) are tied for 16th place with scores of even-par 140. Piot carded a 2-under par 68 in the first round, while Taylor finished the day with a 1-under par 69.
Sophomore August Meekhof (Coopersville, Mich./Allendale) is a shot behind, in 23rd place, at 1-over par 141. Junior Brad Smithson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) is tied for 45th place at 6-over par 146
Sophomore Tyler Eedy (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw Heights), playing as an individual, is tied for 67th place at 11-over par 151
Tuesday's final round tees off at 8 a.m.
