Washington fired a 15-under par 825 to win the team title, with host Notre Dame second at 12-under par 828. Utah was third at 10-under par 830 and Kent State placed fourth at 6-under par 834.
"It was kind of a good event for us minus a few hours in the afternoon round yesterday," Head Coach Casey Lubahn said. "You just can't do that and in a field like this with some really strong teams.
"We're getting there. We're not maybe having some of the standout performances that we've come to expect from some guys, but we're building. We got off to the best start I can remember in the first round and we just didn't capitalize on it. We're seeing more consistency across the lineup and are just waiting for our two top dogs to find their groove."
Freshman Ashton McCulloch (Kingston, Ontario/Holy Cross Catholic) was Michigan State's top finisher for the second-straight weekend, tying for 15th place at even par 210 (68-71-71).
Senior James Piot (Canton, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and junior Brad Smithson (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) both tied for 21st place with scores of 1-over par 211. Piot posted rounds of 2-under par 68, 2-over par 72 and 1-over par 70, respectively. Smithson fired a 5-under par 65 in the third round, tied for the second-lowest score in the field. Smithson's round of 65 is also tied for the second-lowest 18-hole score in Michigan State history.
"It was incredible round for Brad, especially after a tough afternoon Monday," Lubahn said. "That's the type of response he needed and that we want from all of our guys. He was determined today and once this team finds that, we're going to be okay."
Sophomore August Meekhof (Coopersville, Mich./Allendale) tied for 25th place at 2-over par 212 with a 1-over par 71 in the final round.
Senior Troy Taylor (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) shot a 5-over par 75 in Tuesday's round and tied for 33rd place at 5-over par 215.
Sophomore Tyler Eedy (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw Heights), playing as an individual, tied for 72nd place at 19-over par 229, with an 8-over par 78 in the final round.
The Spartans are off until Monday, Oct. 17 and Tuesday, Oct. 18, when the team travels to Vero Beach, Fla. to play in the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational.
