ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Led by redshirt senior Rayvon Foley and redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania, the Michigan State wrestling team walked away Saturday with the team title at the Navy Classic in Annapolis, Md.
Â
Foley claimed the 133 crown after placing second two weeks ago at the MSU Open, while Omania won the 149 title in his season debut for the Spartans. Redshirt senior Cameron Caffey and redshirt junior Layne Malczewski also aided the team score by making the finals in the 197 and 184 weight class, respectively.
Â
Winning all three matches by five-or-more points, Foley knocked off Navy's Joshua Koderhandt by a 8-3 in the final. Two classes up, Omania pinned his opponents in two of his three victories to reach the 149 finals, where he defeated Kody Komara of Kent State in 9-8 decision. For Malczewski, he had major decisions in two of his three winning bouts before losing to Navy's David Key in the final with a 10-4 decision, while Caffey won two matches before suffering a 8-0 major defeat to Jacob Koser of Navy.
Â
Other notables were sophomore Chase Saldate taking third place in the 157 class, pinning both of his first two opponents in under 2:00, and fellow sophomore Caleb Fish going 4-1 to place third at 165.
Â
With 10 Spartans placing in their respective weight classes, MSU finished with 129.5 points to place first in the team standings, edging out second-place Ohio by 3.5 points and host Navy (third) by 7.0 points.
