MSU Women’s Basketball Falls to Fordham Sunday

BRONX, New York - Michigan State women's basketball suffered its first loss of the season, falling 71-68 to Fordham, Sunday afternoon in its road opener at Fordham's Rose Hill Gym.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 4-1 this season, while Fordham improves to 3-1 on the year.
Senior guard Nia Clouden had her second-straight 20-point game with 22 points to go along with five rebounds. Graduate student Tamara Farqhuar had her second double-digit rebound performance with 10 boards to go along with a career-high four blocks. Junior guard Alyza Winston (13) and freshman guard DeeDee Hagemann (11) also scored in double figures for MSU.
Fordham was led by a pair of double-digit performances by Kaityln Downey and Anna DeWolfe with 24 points apiece.
Both teams got off to a fast start with the game tied at 8-8 with six minutes left in the first period, but early turnovers plagued MSU. Three-straight baskets by Dingle put the Rams on top 12-10 with four minutes left in the period. Hagemann then responded with back-to-back buckets of her own. With four players with four points each, the Spartans took an 18-17 lead into the second quarter.
Fordham used a 10-2 run to take a 24-18 lead, but MSU re-took the advantage with a Winston bucket at the 3:47 mark of the second quarter. Freshman guard/forward Matilda Ekh was efficient in the first half going 4-for-5 from the field for nine points, while Clouden came out strong at the end of the half to add nine points.
In the third, Clouden and Winston were both called for their third fouls, as MSU looked for scoring from other places. The Rams scored 11-straight to take a 48-42 with less than three minutes left in the third period. Fordham went on to out-score Michigan State, 21-9, in the quarter to take a 54-44 lead into the final period. Downey scored 11 of her 24 points in the third, going 3-for-3 from long range.
The Spartans scored eight of the first 10 points of the fourth quarter to make a four-point deficit, 56-52 at the 7:23 mark. Clouden took control in the fourth period scoring 11 points, including three 3-pointers. The Spartans were able to cut the Ram lead to two points after a Clouden trey with three seconds remaining, but Fordham went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe in the final period to seal the win.
Michigan State continues its Empire State road trip at St. Francis (Brooklyn) on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m.

- Graduate student forward Tamara Farqhuar had a career-high four blocks against the Rams. She had previously had three on six occasions at Purdue. The forward also had her second double-digit rebound performance with 10 boards.
- Junior guard Alyza Winston reached double figures for the fifth-straight game with 13 points. She has now scored in double figures in 20 career games.
- Senior guard Nia Clouden recorded a new season-best 22 points and five rebounds. She has now scored in double figures in all five games and 76 career games. For the season, Clouden has averaged 17.6 points and 5.6 assists per game. The senior now has 20 career 20-point games.
- The Spartans out-scored the Rams in every quarter, but Fordham took control in the third quarter out-scoring MSU 21-9.
- Freshman DeeDee Hagemann has scored in double figures in three of the four games in which she has played this season, adding 11 points against Fordham.
