EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team started its 118th season with a pair of individual crowns at the Michigan State Open on Saturday in Jenison Field House. Sophomore Chase Saldate picked up where he left off last season, taking first place in the Open Division at 157 and notching a Fall in four of his five matches, while fellow sophomore Caleb Fish won the 165-weight class in the Freshman/Sophomore division after a 6-3 winning decision over Indiana's Robert Major.
It was a good night for redshirt senior Rayvon Foley in his first event at a higher weight class, finishing second in the 133 Open Division after advancing to the finals before losing to Tony Madrigal of Oklahoma in a 4-3 decision. Freshman Luke Daly also had a second-place finish, being defeated by Ohio's Sal Perrine, 4-3, in the 174 Freshman/Sophomore finals, while sophomore Marty Larkin took home third in the same weight class with a 6-4 decision over Graham Calhoun of Wisconsin after three consolation bracket victories.
In the 184 Open Division, redshirt junior Layne Malczewski rebounded after a quarterfinals loss to win in the consolation semis against Carson Berryhill of Oklahoma (Maj. 16-2) before finishing fourth with a Maj. 11-3 loss against Berryhill's teammate, Darrion Roberts.
Other notable finishes were freshman Andy Hampton taking fifth place in the 125 underclassman division and redshirt senior Cameron Caffey beating fellow Spartan Ryan Vasbinder in the fifth-place bout of the 197 Open class. Redshirt junior Nathan Jimenez also landed in fifth place, receiving a bye to the finish in the Open 174 bracket.
Freshman Jacob Lee made it to the semifinals of the Freshman/Sophomore 197-weight class but bowed out of the consolation bracket with a medical forfeit and finished sixth. Sophomore Tristan Lujan also had a sixth-place finish, earning his spot in the Open division at 125.
The Green and White return to the mat at the Navy Classic on Nov. 20, as that event is set for a 10 a.m. start in Annapolis, Maryland.
