
Track & Field Begins Indoor Season at GVSU Holiday Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State men's and women's track & field teams kick off their indoor schedule on Friday, Dec. 3 at the GVSU Holiday Open in Allendale, Michigan.

MSU will be sending representatives from its jumps, sprints and throws squads to Grand Valley State, with the Spartans taking part in the second session of the meet, slated for a 3 p.m. start.

The Holiday Open marks the first time for returning MSU sprinters, jumpers and throwers to compete since the conclusion of the outdoor season last spring, while Spartan newcomers will make their Green and White debuts.

In addition to 2021 All-American distance runners Morgan Beadlescomb (Indoor and Outdoor 5,000m), Jenna Magness (Indoor and Outdoor 5,000m) and Lynsie Gram (Outdoor 10,000m), who all completed their final cross country season two weeks ago, the Spartans bring back a pair of NCAA qualifiers in the pole vault. First Team All-American and senior Sophia Franklin is back after placing eighth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, while fellow senior and Second Team All-American Trevor Stephenson is coming off a 13th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. Additionally, 2020 All-American Brooke Bogan (Indoor Distance Medley Relay) is back in the Green and White as well.

At the last GVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 6, 2019, Michigan State posted five first-place finishes. Bogan began the day by winning the 60m women's sprint with a personal-record time of 7.55, while then-sophomore Jaiden Paris took home the 60m women's hurdles crown at 8.70. For the men's side, Stephenson placed first in the pole vault with a 5.05-meter mark, while Franklin (3.75m) and then-sophomore Calli Ostapowicz (3.60m) came in second and third for the women's pole vault competition. Additionally, then-freshman Olivia Lopez placed fourth in the long jump at 5.62m.

Bogan (60m), Franklin (pole vault), Stephenson (pole vault) are among the 29 Spartans set to compete at the GVSU Holiday Open. Other notable MSU entrants are Michigan transfer Heath Baldwin (pole vault/hurdles) and Miami University transfer Michael Davenport (pole vault).

Following the GVSU Holiday Open, the Spartans will take a semester break before returning to the indoor track and field schedule on Jan. 15, 2022 at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
