Bogan Breaks School Record to Begin Indoor Track Season at GVSU Holiday Open

Six Spartans Place First, as Brooke Bogan Sets New MSU mark with 7.41 time in 60m dash
ALLENDALE, Mich. – In the first meet of the indoor season Friday evening, the Michigan State men's and women's track & field teams saw a school record broken and six Spartans place first in their respective events at the GVSU Holiday Open inside Kelly Family Sports Center.

Despite not taking part in the distance events, Michigan State finished with the third-most team points (116.25), scoring 57.70 on the men's side (third), and 58.75 on the women's side (fourth).

On the track, senior Brooke Bogan (7.49) and freshman Ava Qe'Neisha Young (7.60) both won their heats in the women's 60m dash to qualify for the finals, where the Spartan duo took the top two spots as Bogan ran a school-record time of 7.41 to win, while Young ran a 7.54 time to place second. Senior Haley Rathwell (57.65 personal record) and junior Nala Barlow (59.37) then had the third and sixth-best times in the 400m sprint to earn more team points.

The men's track team also saw a 60m finals qualifier in freshman Logan Allen after a 7.00 posting in his preliminary heat, improving to a 6.93 time in the final to place fourth. Freshman Noah Sage followed in the 400m dash, registering an event-low 47.36 time to earn first place, while fellow rookie Terrance Muex took second at 48.45 and redshirt sophomore Kendal Hammock placed fifth at a PR of 49.29. The 60m hurdles saw junior Heath Baldwin post an 8.27 qualifying time, but he did not race in the event final.

On the inner field, sophomore Avery Budz tied for second in the women's high jump (1.64m PR), while fellow sophomore placed seventh in the long jump at 5.34 meters. Junior Erin McCallum then took third in the triple jump at 11.11 meters. The men's high jump had sophomore Tylor Leedom finish tied for third at 1.94 meters.

In the women's pole vault, seniors Sophia Franklin (4.25m) and Calli Ostapowicz (3.75m) took first and second. Additionally, the men's pole vaulters had the top-3 scorers, as sophomore Ryan Talbot and seniors Trevor Stephenson and Michael Davenport finished tied for the top spot at 5.02 meters, while Baldwin posted the fourth-best height at 4.27 meters.

For the throws squad, Baldwin recorded the second-longest distance in the men's shot put at 14.32 meters, and Talbot was third with a PR of 14.17 meters.

The Spartans now enter a month-long break before returning to the indoor season slate on Jan. 15, 2022 at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
