EAST LANSING, Mich. – After taking over a month off for winter break, the Michigan State men's and women's track & field teams are set to resume their indoor season at the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, hosted by rival Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Â
Coming off a strong showing at the GVSU Holiday Open on Dec. 3 that featured six first-place finishes and senior Brooke Bogan setting the school record for the 60m indoor dash, the Spartans will also see the season debut for its distance runners. Many of these same runners helped the MSU cross country teams earn at-large bids to the 2021 NCAA Championships back in November, where distance runners Morgan Beadlescomb and Jenna Magness earned NCAA All-American honors after doing the same in the 5,000m last season during the indoor and outdoor track seasons.
Â
At Grand Valley State's Holiday Open, Bogan ran a program-record time of 7.41 to win the 60m finals and freshman teammate Ava Qe'Neisha Young placed second at 7.54. Freshman Noah Sage followed in the 400m dash, registering an event-low 47.36 time to earn first place, while senior Sophia Franklin placed first in the women's pole vault at 4.25m. Sophomore Ryan Talbot and seniors Trevor Stephenson and Michael Davenport finished tied for the top spot at 5.02 meters in the men's pole vault to cap off the Spartan winners.
Â
At last year's Simmons-Harvey Invitational, the Spartans won four events with 11 personal bests between the men's and women's teams. Among the event winners were Olivia Lopez's personal-best jump of 5.73m in the long jump, Franklin tying for first in the pole vault at 4.06m and Magness capturing the 3,000m with a PR time of 9:20.65. On the men's side, Stephenson finished second in the pole vault with a height of 4.82m for the Spartans' best placement.
Â
Following the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, Michigan State will return to Ann Arbor next Saturday, Jan. 22, for the Michigan Invitational before heading to the Indiana Relays and Kentucky's Rod McCravy Memorial the following weekend to close out January.
