Spartan Men’s Soccer Falls in Heartbreaker to Michigan, 1-0
2/23/2021 10:25:00 PM | Men's Soccer
This is the first of two meeting between the Spartans and the Wolverines.
BRIGHTON, Mich. - Playing its second-straight game indoors, the Michigan State men's soccer team lost a tight, 1-0, battle to in-state rival Michigan at the Legacy Center Tuesday night.
Michigan State falls to 0-2 in this conference-only schedule, while Michigan is now 2-0.
"We are obviously disappointed in the result. I think for the first 45 minutes we played really well. We did some good stuff; we got good stuff out of (Michael) Miller, and Farai (Mutatu) was really dangerous, and against did some very good things," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I was disappointed in how we gave up the goal. We can't get beat from behind there and defend the way we did."
Both teams had chances on goal early on with junior forward Farai Mutatu getting the first shot on goal in the 10th minute. The Wolverines countered with a pair of shots that were handled by redshirt-junior goalkeeper Hunter Morse.
The Wolverines struck first in the 34th minute when a down field pass from Marc Ybarra found the foot of Kevin Buca to give Michigan the 1-0 lead. In the 43rd minute, Michigan's Umar Farouk Osman was called for his second yellow card, forcing the Wolverines to play a man down from there on out.
The half would end with U-M still leading the Spartans, 1-0.
"We just didn't move the ball quickly enough and get ourselves into some dangerous spots, so that was frustrating in the second half. But if you look at Rutgers and at this game, Rutgers sat in quite a bit, and we had to make the game so to speak. We know what we have to do, and we will get back to work," Rensing said.
In the second half, junior Luke Morrell provided the first shot of the half in the 62nd minute that sailed high. MSU continued to apply the pressure and in the 65th minute, junior midfielder Beck blasted a ball that was punched out by Michigan goalkeeper Owen Finnerty.
Michigan State had three-straight corner kicks late in the second half in the 82nd minute, trying to find that equalizer. MSU's last chance came in the 88th minute when a shot by junior midfielder Alex Shterenberg went wide.
For the game, the shots were tied at 7-7, while both goalkeepers made two saves.
Michigan State will remain on the road to take on Penn State on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m. in University Park, Pa.
