The Spartans dropped their second-straight road game.
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite a quick flurry at the end of the game, Michigan State men's soccer lost to Maryland, 2-1, Friday afternoon in College Park.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 2-5 this season, while the Terrapins improved to 3-3.
Both teams were fairly quiet in the first half with Maryland out-shooting Michigan State 5-0 in the first 45 minutes. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Hunter Morse returned to the lineup after missing two games and was able to absorb shots of the Terps in the first half.
In the 46th minutes, sophomore Nick Stone was given a yellow card resulting in a penalty kick. Paul Bin coverted the PK to give Maryland the 1-0 lead.
After the penalty kick, the Spartan offense came to life. Sophomore forward Gianni Ferri and junior midfielder Jack Beck both fired off shots within seconds of each other to challenge the Terp defense.
In the 76th minute, Bin found the back of the net again with assists from Justin Harris and Chris Rindov to put the Terps up 2-0.
In the 89th minute, Ferri finally broke through with his first goal of the season, to make it a 2-1 game. But time ran out on the Spartans, as Maryland hung on for the win.
Michigan State returns to the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium, taking on No. 10 Michigan on Tuesday, March 23 at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network. The Wolverines captured the earlier match up in Brighton, 1-0.
