Sophomore Nick Stone scores his first career goal.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's soccer lost a heartbreaking overtime game to No. 10 Michigan, 2-1, on a sunny Spring day at DeMartin Stadium on Tuesday.
With the loss, the Spartans fall to 2-6 this season, losing three-straight games. Michigan improves to 4-1-1 this season. Michigan State lost both meetings of the season to Michigan by one-goal margins.
"This is a really tough loss, I think in a lot of ways we did a lot of things to win the game," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "I think we had the game where we wanted it at 1-0, we needed to put that second goal away and certainly had the chances. We didn't go up 2-0 and then it was kind of an unfortunate goal there that led to the tie and that obviously kind of changed the game, along with the red card. I feel for our guys, I thought they played really well, and did a lot of things that probably deserved a better outcome."
It was the Spartans who struck first in the 38th minute. Sophomore defender Nick Stone scored his first career goal with a beautiful strike that got past the Wolverine's standout goalkeeper Owen Finnerty. The Michigan netminder had his 312 minute scoreless streak snapped by Stone. The play began with a blast by senior midfielder Michael Miller that was blocked. Stone collected the blocked shot for the goal.
The half ended with MSU still on top 1-0. The Spartans had the advantage in shots in the first 45 minutes, 5-3.
In the second half, Michigan State held possession early on, but were unable to find that elusive second goal. In the 76th minute, Miller forced Finnerty to make another save with one of his three shots on the day, but MSU couldn't but the game out of reach.
Jackson Ragen scored the equalizer in the 82nd minute. For his fourth goal of the season, Ragen took the pass from Derick Broche and deposited it to the upper right corner out of reach of redshirt-junior goalkeeper Hunter Morse.
Momentum changed in the 92nd minute when Miller was called for a red card, and MSU played a man down. In the 98th minute off a throw in, Kevin Buca's header in front the middle of the box slipped past Morse for the game winner.
As always, it was a physical battle between the Spartans and the Wolverines with 31 fouls between the two teams, along with four cards.
Michigan State will play its final game at DeMartin Stadium against Wisconsin on Wednesday, March 31. Kickoff time will has yet to be determined.
