
Franklin, Johnson and Gram Advance to NCAA Finals Thursday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Three more Spartans advanced to the NCAA Finals during day two of the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Florida at Hodges Stadium. Overall, the Spartans had seven women in action on Thursday.
Sophia Franklin became the first Spartan woman to punch her ticket to the NCAA Finals in the pole vault. She finished tied for eighth, clearing 4.17m. The Big Ten Champions cleared her first four heights without a miss, but was unable to clear 4.27m.
This will be her second trip to Eugene after finishing 18th in 2018. She did not advance past the NCAA East Prelims in 2019.
To end the night, Michigan State had two more women advance to the NCAA Finals. Despite the heat, India Johnson and Lynsie Gram finished in the top 12 to advance in the quarterfinals of the 10,000m. This will be the first trip to nationals for both. Johnson finished seventh with a time of 33:48.22, just shy of her personal best 33:36.00 at the Big Ten Championships. Gram was the last athlete to qualify, finishing 12. She crossed the line in 34:09.78.
Anderson reached the quarterfinals of the 1500 using impressive closing speed. The senior was outside of the top five in her heat with less than 300m remaining. She turned it on to close the race to finish fourth in the second heat with a time of 4:17.43. Overall, she finished ninth overall in the four heats.
In her first NCAA East Prelims, Shakira Dancy finished seventh in the first round of the 200m with a time of 23.93, but did not advance to the quarterfinals.
In the field events, Brittany Krug-Biddle threw 41.67m in first attempt in the javelin and did not make the final. In the hammer, Rebecca Mammel threw 55.05m on her third attempt, but was unable to reach the finals.
On Friday, Michigan State will have three men in action, beginning with Jerimiah Evans in the discus at 1:30 p.m. John Petruno will be back in action in the quarterfinals of the 1500m at 5:45 p.m. Friday will conclude for MSU with Big Ten Champion Morgan Beadlescomb running in the semifinals of the 5000m at 8:30 p.m.
