Franklin and Walder Capture All-American Honors at NCAA Championships

Sophia Franklin finishes eighth in the pole vault, while Walder takes ninth in the decathlon.
EUGENE, Ore. - On the second day of the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships  Sophia Franklin and Wade Walder picked up first and second-team All-American honors, respectively at Heyward Field in Eugene, Oregon on Thursday.
Franklin earned first-team honors in the pole vault after taking honorable-mention honors in 2018. Walder captured second team honors in the decathlon in his first NCAA Championships.
In her second NCAA Finals, Franklin cleared 4.05m and 4.20m on her first attempts. The Big Ten Champion was unable to clear 4.30m, but tied for eighth with Kansas' Samantha Van Hoecke for MSU's first points of the meet.
Behind an outstanding second day, Walder finished ninth in the decathlon with a personal-best 7,565 points. He ended the first day of action in 18th place before soaring back on Thursday. Walder started the second day with a season-best in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.07. He added 675 points with a throw of 40.52m in the discus.
Walder finished second in both the pole vault and the javelin, rising up the standings. He earned 883 points with a best vault of 4.91m. He then added another 733 points with a personal-best throw of 59.66m in the javelin. He concluded the comeback with 666 points in the 1500m with a time 4:42.28.
This was the best Spartan finish in the decathlon since All-American Tim Ehrhardt finished sixth in the 2018 championships.

Sarah Anderson set a new personal best in the 1500m with a time of 4:13.36. Running in an extremely fast heat one, Anderson finished eighth in her heat, just shy of reaching the final. Her previous career best was 4:14.90 in the Big Ten Championships in May.
In their first NCAA Finals, Lynsie Gram and India Johnson both had strong showings in a highly competitive 10,000m, earning honorable mention All-America honors. Gram finished 18th with a personal-best time of 33:28.33. Johnson was 20th, clocking in at 33:44.88.
Michigan State will have only one athlete in action on Friday. Big Ten Champion Morgan Beadlescomb will compete in the final of the men's 5000m at 9:55 p.m. ET.Â
