
Stephenson Earns All-American Honors on the First Day of the NCAA Championships

Stephenson and Wade Walder were the only two Spartans in action on Wednesday.
EUGENE, Ore. - The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships began on Wednesday with the Michigan State men beginning the action at Heyward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Spartans had two athletes competing with Trevor Stephenson in the pole vault and Wade Walder in the decathlon.
Stephenson was the first Spartan to earn All-American honors with his second-team accolades. Competing in his first NCAA Championships, the junior cleared 5.15m on his first attempt. After the clearance, there was a weather delay that slowed down the competition. Stephenson was then not able to clear 5.35m.
Walder was also competing in his first NCAA Championships in the decathlon after transferring from Butler for his senior season.
The championship started for Michigan State with Walder. He earned 804 points with a time of 11.26 in the 100m. The second event was the long jump where he added 723 points. On his second jump, he had his best jump of 6.61m. In the shot put, he garnered 717 points with a throw of 13.81m. Walder used a personal-best to earn 705 points in the high jump. He cleared 1.89m on his first attempt.
The fifth and final event of the first day of the decathlon was the 200m. Walder ended the first day in style with a season-best time of 49.93. Overall, he ends Wednesday 18th with 3,767 points.

Thursday's action will focus on the women, but will start with Walder in the conclusion of the decathlon. Action will begin with the decathlon 110m hurdles at 12:30 p.m. ET. There will be four Spartan women in action, beginning with Sophia Franklin in the pole vault at 7 p.m. ET. Sarah Anderson will compete in the semifinal of the 1500m at 6:46 p.m. ET. The night will end for the Spartans with Lynsie Gram and India Johnson in the 10,000m, starting at 9:08 p.m. ET.
