Spartans Wrap-Up Season-Opening Tournament

HANAHAN, South Carolina – The Michigan State women's golf team wrapped-up its season-opening tournament, the Cougar Classic, at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, South Carolina on Tuesday. The Spartans shot a 12-over-par 300 in Tuesday's final round and ended the tournament 14-over-par 878 (291-287-300) and in 12th place.

The 17-team field featured 11 squads from last season's NCAA Regionals, including Arkansas, which won the Cougar Classic at 23-under-par 841. Arkansas' Brooke Matthews topped the field at the Cougar Classic with an NCAA-record 25-under-par 191.
Valentina Rossi led all Spartans at 1-over-par 217 (72-69-76) and finished in 29th place.
Valery Plata had the Spartans' lowest round of the day on Tuesday with a 2-over-par 74. She finished tied for 36th place at 3-over-par 219 (74-71-74).
Haylin Harris was 6-over-par 222 (74-73-75) and tied for 57th place, while freshman Brooke Biermann was one shot behind at 7-over-par 223 (74-74-75) in what was her first collegiate tournament.
Leila Raines was 12-over-par 228 (71-77-80).
Michigan State is back in action, Oct. 4-5, with the Windy City Classic in Wilmette, Illinois.
