EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State wrestling will appear twice on national television this season, with both duals set for broadcast via Big Ten Network.
The Spartans open their road B1G schedule with a trip to No. 11 Minnesota on Sunday, Jan. 15 to take on the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. (ET) from Maturi Pavilion. Later in the season, the Spartans will take on No. 24 Illinois at 2 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, Feb. 5 from Jenison Field House.
Two nationally televised duals are the most for the Spartans in recent history and signifies the upswing of MSU's wrestling program in recent years under head coach Roger Chandler, who enters his seventh season at the helm. The remainder of Michigan State's Big Ten matches will be streamed online via B1G+.
Michigan State returns seven starters to the lineup from last season including graduate students Rayvon Foley and Cameron Caffey, along with junior Chase Saldate and redshirt senior Layne Malczewski who enter the season among the Top 25 wrestlers in their respective weight classes by InterMat. Junior Caleb Fish was an NCAA qualifier last season at 165 pounds and graduate student Ryan Vasbinder was the NCAA Division II champion at 197 pounds in 2021. Vasbinder will wrestle at heavyweight for the Spartans in 2022-23 after using a redshirt last season. Redshirt junior's Jordan Hamdan and Peyton Omania and junior Tristan Lujan were also regulars in the Spartan lineup last season and return.
The Spartans open their season in North Carolina the weekend of November 11-12 taking on Davidson and Presbyterian. MSU looks to improve upon its 10-4 overall dual record (4-4 B1G) and its 40th place finish at the NCAA Championships from a season ago.
