
Field Hockey Topped by No. 10 Michigan

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Despite a second-half offensive push, Michigan State field hockey fell to No. 10 Michigan, 3-1, at Ralph Young Field Friday evening.
Michigan moves to 7-4 overall on the season and 2-2 in conference play. Michigan State falls to 5-6 and 0-5 in the Big Ten.
The Wolverines broke the scoring open early, as Lora Clarke found the back of the net in the first two minutes of the game. Michigan took a 2-0 advantage in the 10th minute with a goal from Erin Reilly. Spartan goalkeeper Monique Jardell made a game-high six saves in the first quarter, while defender Georgia Davies recorded her third defensive save of the season.
The Spartans and Wolverines battled in a scoreless second quarter. Michigan State's defense held off six Michigan shots as Michigan held the 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.
The defensive battle continued between the two teams in the third quarter as both teams failed to get on the board. Lulu Fulton and Celina Riccardo recorded shots for the Spartans in the quarter.
Michigan took a 3-0 lead in the 49th minute on a penalty corner goal from Sarah Pyrtek. The Spartans responded with a penalty corner goal of their own, as Ashley Harlock passed to Merel Hanssen to make the score 3-1. The goal was Hanssen's third of the season. Harlock's assist made her the category leader for the Spartans on the season, recording her sixth.
Despite a push in offensive pressure from the Spartans in the fourth quarter, Michigan held on for the 3-1 victory.
The Spartans return to action on Sunday, Oct. 9, traveling to Muncie, Ind. for a 1 p.m. nonconference matchup with Ball State. The game will air on ESPN+.
