EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey returns to action this weekend, hosting No. 10 Michigan on Friday, Oct. 7 before traveling to Muncie, Ind. for a non-conference matchup with Ball State on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m. Â
Friday's game will be the first home game for the Spartans since Sept. 18.Â
LAST TIME OUTÂ
The Spartans ended their four-game road stretch in Ohio last weekend, falling to #24 Ohio State, 2-1, in overtime on Sept. 30, before topping Ohio, 2-1, on Oct. 2. Sophomore Ellie Rutherford leads Michigan State in scoring with nine points (4 g, 1 a). Graduate student Isa van der Weij has also added four goals for the Spartans. Graduate goalkeeper Monique Jardell has played every minute in goal for Michigan State, posting a 0.694 save percentage. Rutherford and midfielders Merel Hanssen and Maddie Lawlor were the three goal scorers for Michigan State last weekend, with Lawlor's goal being the first of her career.Â
FAMILIAR FACESÂ
Friday's game against Michigan will feature familiar faces for the Spartans. Senior Devin Reilly's sister, Erin, is a junior forward for the Wolverines and also played at Saline High School with Spartan forward Hannah Jarvie. Junior Eliza Kreske and Michigan's Serena Brimacombe and Zoe Bormet played field hockey together at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor. Spartan freshman Gracie Burns played field hockey at Dexter High School alongside Michigan's Abby Tamer.Â
SCOUTING MICHIGANÂ
The tenth-ranked Wolverines enter Friday's game on a two-game winning streak, defeating No. 19 Rutgers, 4-1, and Ball State, 7-0, last weekend. Michigan posts a 6-4 record on the season and sits at 1-2 in conference play, its four losses coming at the hands of top-10 opponents. Sophomore midfielder Abby Tamer leads the Wolverines in scoring with 21 points (9 g, 3 a). Michigan owns a 47-25-7 lead in the all-time series and won the last contest between the two teams, 6-1, on Sept. 24, 2021.Â
SCOUTING BALL STATEÂ
Ball State posts a 5-5 overall record and 2-1 record in MAC play. Freshman Fleur Knopert leads the Cardinals in points with 16, recording six goals and four assists so far this season. Michigan State and Ball State last played on Sept. 12, 2021, with the Spartans securing a 7-1 victory. Ball State leads the all-time series, 13-11-2. The Cardinals host Ohio on Friday for their first game of the weekend.Â

The Spartans host a pair of conference games at Ralph Young Field next weekend, welcoming Northwestern to East Lansing on Friday, Oct. 14 at 3 p.m. Michigan State then hosts Indiana in the team's annual Pink Game for a noon contest on Sunday, Oct. 16. Both games will stream on B1G+.Â
