EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State wrestling team opens its 119th competitive season on Saturday, Nov. 5, as the Spartans welcome a competitive field to Jenison Field House for the MSU Open. First whistle is slated for 9:30 a.m., with wrestling scheduled to run throughout the day.

HEAD COACH ROGER CHANDLER SAID…
"I am very much looking forward to the start of the season, and am excited to once again host the MSU Open here in East Lansing. It's always great to host one of the toughest early season tournaments in the country, and this season will be no different. We have a lot of new faces to the program that I know are eager to compete, as well as all our returners. Everyone is always excited to get the season started and this weekend is an excellent way to do that."
Â
THE FIRST WHISTLE
The Green & White return to work following an impressive 10-4 dual season a year ago highlighted by a quartet of Big Ten victories. After the dual season wrapped up, Michigan State landed five student-athletes as NCAA Championship qualifiers, led by graduates Rayvon Foley and Cameron Caffey, redshirt senior Layne Malczewski, and juniors Chase Saldate and Caleb Fish. Redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan also returns as an NCAA qualifier from the 2021 campaign. MSU features a former NCAA Division II champion at 197 pounds in graduate Ryan Vasbinder, who will wrestle at heavyweight for the Spartans in 2022-23. Head Coach Roger Chandler enters his seventh season at the helm in East Lansing with the start of the 2022 MSU Open.
Â
OPEN SEASON
In its first season back following a COVID-induced hiatus, the 2021 MSU Open once again featured some of the premier wrestlers in the collegiate ranks. Michigan State led the way at the event, taking home a pair of crowns with Saldate taking first at 157 pounds and Fish placing at the top of the 165 weight class. Foley placed second in the 133 Open Division a year ago, with then-underclassmen Luke Daly and Marty Larkin each placing in the top three of their respective weight classes in the freshman/sophomore division.
Â
SCOUTING THE FIELD
MSU leads an 18-team field, with an additional 13 individuals expected to wrestle unattached. Other teams competing include Ashland, Central Michigan, Cleveland State, Davenport, Findlay, Grand Valley State, Illinois, Iowa Western, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Ohio State, Ohio, Oklahoma, Olivet College, Michigan, Wisconsin and Utah Valley. The MSU Open features six of the 14 Big Ten wrestling programs and highlights multiple outstanding individuals and teams from across all divisions of college wrestling.
