EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State men's tennis split a pair of matches on Saturday, February 12, falling to Louisville by a 6-1 margin before coming back in the evening for a 5-2 win over Chicago State.
The Spartans move to 7-2 overall, while Louisville becomes 4-4 and Chicago State falls to 3-6.
"Tough loss to Louisville, we battled hard in a long match. At the end of the day, we need to get better, and it was great for the team to bounce back and beat Chicago State, especially after losing the doubles point," Head Coach Gene Orlando said. "Sometimes it's tough playing a doubleheader, and Chicago State comes in as a good team, they were hungry, and we responded well taking five out of the six singles matches."
In doubles play, the Cardinals claimed the first match with a 6-2 win over Kazuki Matsuno and Nick Williams at the No. 1 court. The Spartans suffered 6-4 defeats at No. 2 and 3. Graydon Lair and Reed Crocker led the fight on court two, while Carson Gates and Max Sheldon took on Louisville's Tin Chen and Sergio Hernandez on court three.
Playing at No. 4 singles, Graydon Lair was on the losing end of a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Hernandez to give Louisville their first singles point of the match. Louisville's winning ways were briefly interrupted when Sheldon came up with a Spartan victory on the No. 6 court. He defeated David Mizrahi of the Cardinals in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, to move to a 10-4 overall record in singles play.
The No. 5 and 3 courts wrapped up next, with Nick Williams falling 6-3, 6-3 to his opponent, while Luke Baylis battled at court three. After a 6-4 loss in the first set, the second set was forced into tiebreaker territory at 6-6, with Louisville's Chen earning the tiebreak point and coming away with the win.
Both matches at the top two spots were forced into a third set as the Spartans continued to battle. At No. 1, Jack Winkler fell 4-6 in his first set before evening things up with a 6-4 win in the second. Louisville's Etienne Donnet was able to defeat Winkler 6-1 in the final set. Carson Gates represented the Spartans in the No. 2 spot, falling to Josh Howard-Tripp.
The evening was a brighter spot for the Spartans as they defeated the Panthers 5-2. Althought Chicago State came away with the doubles point, MSU won 5 of its 6 singles matches to earn the victory. The Panthers won 6-1 at No. 1 doubles against Nick Williams and Kazuki Matsuno, and took 6-2 and 6-4 wins in the No. 2 and 3 spots.
First off the court in singles action against Chicago State was Jarreau Campbell, having earned the win over Jesus Perez Plaza 6-1, 6-3. At No. 5, Matsuno quickly followed up on the first MSU point with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Chicago State's Jakub Zamorski.
Playing at No. 6, Josh Portnoy made quick work of his opponent Hugo Hidalga Vega with a 6-1 victory in the first set and a 7-5 win in the second. Josh Mukherjee moved to 5-2 on the season in singles play when he defeated Chicago State's Javier Sanchez Pradillo 6-3, 6-2. At the top spot, Anthony Pero won his first set 6-4 before falling 4-6 in the second set to force a 10-point tiebreaker set. He was defeated 10-2 in the tiebreaker by Chicago State's Pedro Alvarez.
The Spartans also took time during today's matches to honor men's tennis alum Dave Brogan. Brogan was a member of the team in 1954-56 and has been shown his support of Spartan Tennis in many impactful ways since his years as a player. The team each wore special jerseys with 'Brogan' on the back and his graduation year, '56. Brogan received a framed jersey in a ceremony after the doubles point against Louisville.
Michigan State is back in action next Sunday, February 20, against Middle Tennessee and Bellarmine in East Lansing at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
