EAST LANSING, Mich. - Following Friday night's road meet at Central Michigan, Michigan State gymnastics is back in action Sunday, February 13 for a conference dual meet with Illinois. The meet is schedule to begin inside Jenison Field House at 4 p.m. Fans are welcomed to attend under Michigan State's Vaccination Policy for Spectators.
ERASING HATE
Sunday marks MSU gymnastics' inaugural 'Erase Hate' meet, a celebration of inclusivity and the value that one's individuality can bring to society.
"We're looking forward to not only competing against Illinois on Sunday but initiating our first-ever "Erase Hate!" meet, acknowledging and celebrating everyone's individual and unique differences, providing inclusivity and equality for all," head coach Mike Rowe said of the event.
LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans are experiencing a quick turnaround after competing in a tri-meet at Central Michigan with Western Michigan on Friday, February 11. Michigan State bested the two MAC opponents with a final score of 196.500. Central Michigan placed second with a close 196.475, while Western Michigan came in third with a 195.400.
Three Spartans came away with event titles on the day, sophomore Giana Kalefe and freshman Gabrielle Stephen earning a share of the beam title each with a 9.925. Kalefe's score set a new career-high, while Stephen followed up on an impressive 9.950 from last weekend against Maryland.
MSU's third and final event title of the meet came from freshman Skyla Schulte with a 9.875 showing on the uneven bars in the final rotation of the night for the Spartans.
Michigan State excelled on beam in the meet. With five Spartans earning a 9.800 or higher, MSU posted a 49.350 as a team, their highest score this season and good for the fourth-best beam score in program history. The final team score of 196.500 was the eighth best in Spartan history.
UP NEXTThe Spartans are preparing for the annual Big Five Meet in Toledo, Ohio on Saturday, February 19. MSU will compete with fellow Big Ten teams Minnesota, Penn State, Nebraska and Rutgers inside the Huntington Center beginning at 7 p.m.
