EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team completes a three-match homestand on Saturday morning, as the Spartans host Bowling Green at 11 a.m. from the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Coming into the meeting at 5-1 and on a five-match winning streak, MSU will look to move to 6-1 for the first time since the 2017-18 season.
In their last match, the Spartans claimed a 6-1 victory over in-state foe Eastern Michigan on Feb. 18 that kept MSU undefeated at home. The Green and White opened the night with three wins in doubles play, as senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can moved up to the No. 1 court and picked up a 6-4 victory, while graduate student Mary Lewis paired up with junior Tia Mukherjee for the first time to get a 6-4 victory in the No. 2 spot. Freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka then finished of the sweep with another 6-4 win on the third court. In singles action, Mukherjee was victorious in her first dual-match appearance of the season, while Stephens, Gisclon and Can all notched solo wins as well to clinch the MSU victory. Lewis fell in her singles match in the lone MSU blemish, but senior Lauren Lemonds won her battle on court No. 4 via tiebreaker to give the Spartans a 6-1 final score.
Gisclon currently leads the Spartans with nine singles victories and Can is behind her at eight singles wins, as both players are 5-1 in dual matches this season. Gisclon also enters Saturday on a five-match winning streak, while Stephens and Mukherjee have each won four-straight singles matches. For doubles, Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz hold a team-best 9-7 record while Stephens and Can are second on the squad with a 5-4 record as a duo.
Bowling Green arrives in East Lansing with a 2-4 record, registering wins against Findlay and Saint Francis (Pa.) before falling by a 6-1 score at Youngstown State last week. Annika Vetter paces the Falcons with a 9-7 singles mark, while Ioanna Tsadari is second on the team with eight singles wins. The most successful doubles pairing has been Selina Karg and Laura Maia Silveira, as the duo have went 4-1 together this season.
MSU leads the all-time series with Bowling Green at 22-1, as the Spartans have won the past 15 meetings. The most recent matchup between the two schools was Feb. 9, 2019 in East Lansing, a meeting that saw MSU grab a 4-0 victory thanks to the doubles point and singles wins from Pietrowicz, Stephens and Davina Nguyen.
Following Saturday, Michigan State hits the road for three matches in the Mountaineer State, opening with a neutral-site contest against James Madison on March 5 in Huntington, W.V. The Spartans then stay in Huntington to play at Marshall on March 6 before making the trek to Morgantown for a March 9 showdown with West Virginia.
