Spartans extend winning streak to six-straight
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State used a clean sweep to win its sixth-straight match on Saturday, scoring a 7-0 victory over Bowling Green in non-conference women's tennis action at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans moved to 6-1 with the win, MSU's best spring start since an identical 6-1 opening stretch in 2018. For the visiting Falcons, they shifted to 2-5 on the season.
Michigan State began doubles action with senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can cruising to a 6-2 victory on the top court over the Falcons' Selina Karg and Hannah Neuman. Senior Maja Pietrowicz and junior Monique Karoub then paired up for the first time this season to score a 6-4 win against the No. 3 BGSU duo of Annika Vetter and Florencia Fuentes, clinching the opening point for MSU.
The Spartans swept the doubles courts when freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka broke a 5-5 tie by taking the next two points over Ioanna Tsadari and Maru Poppe, finishing off a 7-5 victory.
Singles action saw Nicole Stephens pick up a win in the No. 2 spot, as Karg medically defaulted with Stephens ahead 5-3 in the opening set, giving Michigan State a 2-0 advantage. Gisclon then knocked off Neuman by a 6-3, 6-1 score on the fifth court, before senior Lauren Lemonds defeated Poppe (6-3, 6-1) in the No. 4 spot and junior Tia Mukherjee followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Fuentes on the sixth court.
Pietrowicz had to fight to win her showdown with Ioanna Tsadari on the top singles court, but the Spartan eventually prevailed via a 6-4, 6-4 score. Rounding out the afternoon was Can, who needed a tiebreaker in the second set to secure the 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory against Vetter and close off the Michigan State sweep.
The singles victory extended Gisclon's own winning streak to six matches, while the Spartans now hold a 23-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Falcons.
Michigan State now hits the road for three matches in the Mountaineer State, opening with a neutral-site contest against James Madison on March 5 in Huntington, W.V. The Spartans then stay in Huntington to play at Marshall on March 6 before making the trek to Morgantown for a March 9 showdown with West Virginia.
