BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Michigan State softball team found itself in a pitcher's battle on Friday, February 25, falling to Florida Atlantic by a final score of 2-1. Sophomore Ashley Miller struck out 12 batters in 6.1 innings of work, allowing just one earned run. FAU starter Lynn Gardner allowed three hits and one unearned run in a complete game effort.
With a loss Michigan State falls to 5-5 on the season with four games left to be played this weekend.
The game remained scoreless through five innings before Michigan State broke through in the fifth. FAU threatened to score in the bottom of the second when a walk and a single put two runners on. With the Owls in scoring position, Miller proceeded to strike out the final two batters of the inning.
Florida Atlantic once again put themselves in scoring position in the bottom of the fifth inning following a pair of singles to start the inning, but Michigan State battled and came out unscathed. Freshman Macy Lee picked off the lead runner at third to kill FAU's momentum, her second thrown out runner of the game.
After freshman Kayleigh Roper reached on an error in the top of the sixth inning, senior Jessica Mabrey doubled her home with a hard-hit ball off the left-center wall. Mabrey has heated up for the Spartans as of late hitting 6-for-15 in the last five games with five runs scored and three RBI.
Miller's strong mentality in the circle shown through once again in the sixth after allowing a lead-off triple. Miller sent the next three batters down in order without allowing the run to cross home plate.
Florida Atlantic plated two runners in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and defeat the Spartans.
Up Next: Michigan State plays two games in Boca Raton tomorrow, February 26, facing Jacksonville at 4:30 p.m. and FAU at 7 p.m.
