BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Michigan State softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Florida Atlantic Strikeout Cancer Tournament. MSU defeated Jacksonville by a score of 9-1 in the first game of the afternoon before falling to host FAU in the night cap, 2-1.
Michigan State's record moves to 6-6 on the season with two more games yet to be played in Boca Raton.
Junior Sarah Ladd started game one for the Spartans, turning in a strong performance to improve her record to 2-2. Ladd pitched 5.2 innings allowing one hit and one earned run. Freshman Faith Guidry came on in relief of Ladd in the sixth inning, recording one out and earning her first career save.
MSU entered the bottom half of the sixth inning up 2-1 before a breakout inning helped the Spartans secure a win by run rule.
A second inning single from junior Camryn Wincher got things started for Michigan State as her base knock scored senior Kendall Kates. Redshirt sophomore Jenae Wash extended Michigan State's lead in the second inning on her first home run of the season. Wash clubbed a high towering ball over the left field wall and into the parking lot to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
Jacksonville found life in the top of the sixth when a triple from Allison Bratek scored a runner and cut Michigan State's lead in half.
Needing some insurance runs, the Spartan offense broke out in the sixth inning by scoring seven runs. Fifth year Caitie Ladd opened the inning with a walk as Dolphin pitcher Skylar Whitty walked the first three Spartan batters she faced. With the bases loaded, Ladd came around to score on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Alexis Barroso also drew a walk before a single to center field by freshman Macy Lee scored fellow freshman Kayleigh Roper to make it 4-1. Senior Courtney Callahan joined the hit parade with a single down the left field line that scored senior Jessica Mabrey. Mabrey reached base all four times at the plate against Jacksonville, walking three times and singling once. Barroso would eventually score on a passed ball to make it 6-1 in favor of the Spartans.
After a walk by sophomore Zaquai Dumas, a groundout from Wash was enough to score senior Abby Joseph from third. Ladd came back up to the plate, signifying that the Spartans had batted around the order in the sixth. Needing two more runs to force a run rule, Ladd singled home Dumas and Callahan.
In game two against Florida Atlantic, sophomore Ashley Miller dazzled in the circle once again pitching 6.1 innings and striking out 11 Owl batters. Miller allowed four hits and two unearned runs.
Wincher drove in the lone run of the game for the Spartans in the first inning, scoring Mabrey after a lead-off walk. Mabrey advanced from first to third after a pair of wild pitches.
Florida Atlantic tied the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first after a two-out error allowed the lead runner to score.
Michigan State nearly re-took the lead in the top of the second, but the Spartan runner was called out at the plate.
With two on and one out in the bottom of the seventh a passed ball allowed both FAU runners to get into scoring position. A fielder's choice ended the game as the ball came loose on the tag at the plate.
Up Next: Michigan State will wrap up its trip to Boca Raton with two more games on Sunday, Feb. 27. The Spartans will face Columbia in game of the day at 10 a.m. and LIU in game two at approximately 12:30 p.m.
