Men's Tennis Travels to Western Michigan Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis takes to the road for the first time this season for a match against Western Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 5. Play is set to begin at 3 p.m. inside the West Hills Athletic Club.
SPARTANS CLOSE OUT JANUARY 6-0
With Saturday's wins over Toledo and Bucknell behind them, the Spartans completed a 6-0 sweep of their opponents to close out the month of January. It was the first undefeated season-opening month for MSU since their 9-0 start in 2011.
Michigan State earned a 4-3 victory in its battle with the Toledo Rockets before going on to sweep Bucknell, 7-0.
The Spartans swept the courts in doubles against Toledo to earn the first point of the match. Carson Gates and Max Sheldon picked up a 6-3 win at the No. 3 court, while Jack Winkler and Reed Crocker won 6-4 at No. 2. Gates, Sheldon and Luke Baylis all won their singles matches to help MSU to the 4-3 win.
Against the Bison, MSU won the doubles point with wins on two of the three courts, and picked up wins in all six singles matches. Baylis and Anthony Pero won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles, followed by a 7-6 tiebreaker victory by Josh Portnoy and Josh Mukherjee at No. 3 doubles. Mukherjee, Portnoy and Pero also each won in singles action against Bucknell. Jarreau Campbell earned his first win of the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles. Reed Crocker on court five won the final match of the night 6-7, 6-2 with a lengthy 13-11 tiebreak victory.
Luke Baylis went 2-0 in singles action on the day and picked up a 6-4 win in doubles play with Anthony Pero on the No. 2 court against Bucknell.

"The Spartans have had a great week of practice and are prepared for our first road test of the season. Western Michigan is a very gritty and talented team. Playing the Broncos on their home courts will be a great challenge for our team.
SERIES NOTES
The Spartans hold a 61-33 all-time record in matches against the Broncos. Matches played in Kalamazoo have been tighter, with MSU holding a narrow 21-20 advantage. In their last matchup, Michigan State won a close battle against Western Michigan, 4-3, at home on February 7, 2020.
UP NEXT
The Spartans return home for a pair of matches against Louisville and Chicago State on Saturday, February 12 beginning at noon. The first match of the day will also serve as a celebration of Spartan men's tennis alum Dave Brogan and his contributions to the program throughout the years.
