KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Michigan State men's tennis dropped a 6-1 decision to Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon inside the West Hills Athletic Club in Kalamazoo.
"It was a tough loss tonight," Head Coach Gene Orlando said. "WMU played well, and we competed hard but just didn't finish. Back to work to continue to improve and be ready for Louisville next week."
The Broncos clinched the doubles point with two wins on courts 1 and 2. The Spartans drew the first doubles win with a 6-4 victory at No. 3 by Carson Gates and Max Sheldon, over Anton Arzhankin and Ferdinand Schueleter. Western Michigan followed up with wins in the final two matches to secure the point. At No. 1, Nick Williams and Kazuki Matsuno fell in a close battle, 7-6, to Arjun Honnappa and Flynn Lohse. In the last doubles match, Reed Crocker and Jack Winkler were defeated 7-5 by Western Michigan's Peter Kuzsynski and Joaquin Caballer.
Western Michigan claimed five of six singles points, with MSU earning one point. Graydon Lair took the edge on court five, defeating Brogan Pierce from WMU in a three-set battle. After winning the first set 6-4, Lair fought out of a 5-7 second-set loss to win 7-5 in the third and clinch the match.
Three of MSU's singles matches were decided by a third set. Max Sheldon at No. 4 won his first set 6-4 before he was overtaken by Honnappa in the final two sets to give WMU the win. Lohse and Luke Baylis also had a battle at the No. 3 court. Despite being shut out 6-0 in the first set, Baylis put up a fight and won the second set 6-4. The match ended in Lohse's favor, however, as Baylis lost the third set by a 6-3 margin.
The Broncos also picked up wins at No. 1 and 2 to earn the 6-1 victory. Jack Winkler, at No. 1, forced his first set against Kuszynski into extra points, but ended up falling 7-6, 6-4. Carson Gates fell in straight sets at No. 2.
The Spartans are back in action at home next Saturday in a pair of matches against Louisville and Chicago State. Saturday will also include a celebration of MSU men's tennis alum Dave Brogan and his contributions to the program throughout the years.
