LAST TIME OUT
The Spartans are back in East Lansing after a road battle on Sunday with No. 1 Michigan, where the Green & White posted their second-highest team score in program history in the 196.775-197.925 loss to the defending National Champion Wolverines.
The Spartans posted the 10th-best score in program history and their best event score of the day on floor with a 49.425. It was the Spartans' top score finish on floor since they registered a 49.450 against Nebraska on Jan. 26, 2020.
Sophomore Baleigh Garcia won the beam title with a 9.925, a tie for her career-best. Freshman Skyla Schulte placed third in the all-around with a 39.350.
HIGH-SCORING FLOOR
MSU is currently No. 13 in the nation on floor with the fourth-highest average in the conference, averaging a 49.063 over four meets. Leading the way individually is senior Ashley Hofelich, who ranks 22nd nationally and eighth in the B1G with a floor average of 9.906. She has won two floor titles for the Spartans this season and five in her MSU career.
COACH ROWE QUOTE
"We are so proud and thrilled with the progress that this team has been making week-by-week, developing better consistency with their attention to details by raising their own efforts in conjunction with where we set the bar. The fun part of it all is that we still have room to grow, and it isn't rocket science to any of us that we can still do fantastic things and achieve milestones and growth that we have attempted in the past, but fell somewhat short.
We continue to work for quality over quantity and are in a position to occasionally rest our all-arounders on an event or two to help their longevity through the remainder of the season, while giving a little more experience for those on the cusp of breaking into lineups. The strategy is becoming interesting, challenging and we feel extremely fortunate that we are in this position at this point in time.
This weekend we will also be reuniting with our alumni and we're so excited to welcome them back, and welcome them home. We are looking forward to their feedback on the current progress of this 2022 team and hope they enjoy them as much as we do!"
ROWE ON NATIONAL GIRLS AND WOMEN IN SPORTS DAY
"The positive potential and influential effects that sports have on girls and women is endless! Health and fitness benefits aside, female sports provide fundamental life-skills and lessons that they will carry on throughout the rest of their lives which impact their emotional well-being and help develop self-confidence.
When an athlete learns gymnastics, they're developing balance in both their body and their minds and gaining complete full-body strength through isometric training, which also serves to improve posture and lessens chances for physical injury. Gymnastics utilizes goal-setting and time management, along with discipline and conquering fear through planned skill progressions and problem solving. Multi-tasking while engaging focus and inherent concentration with consistency builds confidence and leads to success, all while developing social skills resulting in building life-long friendships. When it comes down to it, what's more fun than learning to soar through the air?"
SPARTANS VS THE TERRAPINS
Michigan State last faced off against Maryland in Toledo at Elevate the Stage on February 22, 2020. The Spartans took fourth out of five Big Ten teams with a 195.975, while the Terrapins finished in fifth with a 195.325.
SCHULTE RECEIVES B1G FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS FOR SECOND TIME
Skyla Schulte earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week Honors earlier this week for her impressive performance in Sunday's meet. It was the second Freshman of the Week Award given to Schulte and the third awarded to the Spartans this season.
Schulte placed third overall in the all-around at the meet with No. 1 Michigan on Jan. 30, posting a personal-best 39.350. Schulte has competed all-around in every meet so far for the Green & White, scoring a 39.000 or higher each time.
Schulte also set new personal-best scores in the beam and floor events. She tied for fourth overall on beam with a 9.875 and tied for fifth on floor, posting a 9.900 for the second time in her Spartan career.
Schulte's all-around score ranks ninth in the Big Ten and 34th in the nation. She has won three event titles for the Green & White over four meets.
