Women’s Golf Opens Spring with Sixth Place Finish at UCF Challenge

East Lansing, Mich. – Playing in a field of 18 teams that featured nine of the top-50 teams in the country, Michigan State's women's golf team finished in sixth place with a score of 13-under par 851 in the UCF Challenge, held at Eagle Creek Golf Course in Orlando, Fla.
The 18-team field tried to play two rounds on Monday to avoid inclement weather in the area; play was halted in the evening due to darkness and the tournament's final seven holes were played on Tuesday morning.
Final Results
Wake Forest (No. 6) fired a 45-under par 819 to win the tournament title, 14 strokes ahead of second-place Kentucky (31-under par 833). Virginia (No. 7) was third at 27-under par 837, with Charleston in fourth place at 19-under par 845 and Auburn (No. 12) fifth at 16-under par 848.
Michigan State's score of 13-under par 851 was the sixth best 54-hole tournament score in program history. The Spartans posted rounds of 4-under par 284, 5-under par 283 and 4-under par 284, respectively.
Freshman Brooke Biermann (Wildwood, Mo. / Lafayette) was the top finisher for the Spartans, tying for 19th place with a 54-hole score of 5-under par 211, including a 2-under par 70 on Tuesday. It was the top finish and best 54-hole score of the year for Biermann.
Senior Valery Plata (Floridablanca, Colombia / Colegio La Quinta del Puente) fired back-to-back rounds of 2-under par 70 to close out the tournament and tied for 30th place at 2-under par 214. She was joined in a tie for 30th place by sophomore Valentina Rossi (Rosario, Argentina), who finished with a 1-over par 73 on Tuesday. Rossi fired a 4-under par 68 in the first round, the best individual round of her MSU career.
Senior Haylin Harris (Carmel, Ind. / Carmel) shot a 3-over par 75 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 45th place at 1-over par 217 and junior Nina Rissi (Barcelona, Spain) fired a 1-under par 71 in the final round to tie for 57th place at 3-over par 219.
Michigan State is back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 21, competing in the ICON Invitational. The two-day event will be held at the Golf Club of Houston.
