EAST LANSING, Mich. – With both squads riding three-match winning streaks, the Michigan State women's tennis team prepares to host Arizona on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The 4 p.m. match will start a three-match homestand for the Spartans, who opened their home slate with a Jan. 30 win over DePaul before heading down to Cincinnati, Ohio for two more victories this past weekend.
MSU is coming off wins over Xavier and Virginia Tech on back-to-back days at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. The Green and White kicked off the weekend on Feb. 5, getting doubles victories from senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can on the No. 2 court and graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz in the No. 1 spot to take the doubles point at Xavier. Can and Stephens then quickly won their singles matches, while Pietrowicz and freshman Charlotte Gisclon added singles wins to propel MSU to a 5-2 final over the Musketeers.
The Spartans then grabbed a 4-1 win over Virginia Tech on Feb. 6 with four-straight singles wins from Pietrowicz, Can, Gisclon and senior Lauren Lemonds, erasing a doubles-point loss that overshadowed a 6-0 win from the pairing of Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka. With the Sunday win, MSU has now started the spring season 3-1 for the second-consecutive year.
Can (7-2), Gisclon (7-5) and Pietrowicz (7-3) are tied for the team lead with seven singles victories each, with Can on a six-match winning streak entering Wednesday and Gisclon and Pietrowicz undefeated during the Spartans' three-match winning streak. On the double side, Lewis and Pietrowicz pace MSU with an 8-7 record as a duo, while Stephens and Can have paired up for a 3-4 mark.
The Wildcats are coming off a 4-3 victory over San Diego State on Feb. 5, moving Arizona to 3-0 on the season after identical 7-0 wins over UTEP and New Mexico State a week before.
Parker Fry paces the Wildcats in singles play with a 10-5 record. Right behind her is Salma Ziouti at 8-4 overall. Additionally, Lexi Ryngler is riding a five-match winning streak after dropping her first two matches. Fry and Kayla Wilkins also lead the team with a 4-3 doubles mark.
Wednesday will mark the first all-time meeting between the two programs in a dual match.
Following Wednesday, Michigan State will take over a week off before hosting Eastern Michigan on Feb. 18 in the second contest of MSU's three-match homestand. The showdown with the Eagles is set for a 5 p.m. start.
